I recently picked up this upper off of a GB auction.  The auction photos weren't very good, but it looked interesting enough to warrant the purchase.

Here's the new upper (top of the picture) compared to a GM upper.  Notice the counter bored front lugs and the different casting details.

Two GM uppers (left and center) and the new upper (on the right)

The "R" is noticeably larger than those on Colt and GM uppers

This upper assembly has been rebuilt at some point in its life.  It now sports an A2 port door and SAK MP CHROME BORE barrel.  Don't know if the FA knob is original or a replacement.  Ditto for the FSB.

Amongst the people that I've been showing these pictures to, we have a general consensus as to who the original manufacturer of the Upper Receiver was, but I wanted to put these out to everyone to see if there's a definitive answer to be found.

Thx

I don't know if the there's been a consensus as yet to distinguish between HR and GM uppers. ??  I have one that looks identical to yours in color, but will have to look and see if it has any other characteristics.  Judging by the loose grinding tolerances in the ends of the carry handle channel, I'd guess at it being an H&R.

From what I have seen and read up on I would have to agree with Hal. I seen it when it was on GB and thought there was something special about it.

From my research and the examples that I have and have handled, I agree it is likely not a GM. And not like any Colt I've seen either. I would speculate it is an H&R.

Really nice piece there Veltro, interesting forging characteristics for sure, lots of square angles and sharp corners, flashing, etc. And of course the finish is beautiful!!

Wish it had its original barrlel, that would help ID for sure.

Nice score my man!!

Is that a forge mark on the FA channel?  Looks like an "A" but could be a blemish.

Cool upper.  I think that receiver is most like one that member JoeBud has, maybe he can post some pics.  Here are some other posts that might help:

The thing I look for but can be difficult to tell from pictures is square forge on the left side and slightly round forge above and in front of the port door on the right side.  (am I imagining this?)  I don't think any other type of upper has that combination.  Look at the shape of the arrow and "R" too.

ETA:  Another helpful thread, more pictures of JoeBud's uppers here:

There are no forge marks on this upper.  Must be a blemish (or the roll pin) that you're seeing.
