I was digging through some stuff out of storage, and found a 20" pencil barrel I picked up a long time ago. The only markings I can find are S MP C on the underside about 2" from the muzzle.

I verified that it does have a chromed chamber, and an unchromed bore. The FSB is smooth with a drain hole. Any idea about who may have produced it, and when?

As I remember, it was with boxes of M16 parts that the seller claimed had 'come back from Israel."  I do remember all of the stuff having a lot of fine sand on it. I picked up this upper at the same time as the barrel.

I had toyed with the idea of using it for a .22 conversion or cutting it down to make a dissipator, but I thought I would see if anyone has any information on it first. It's in really good shape.

I can;t say what you have, as I don;t know, but I wouldn;t cut it for a .22 upper. Aside from it's potential retro collector value, it has a .224 diameter bore, where as a .22 rimfire barrel is .221 I think......might even be as small as .219...........my memory is the szhitz.

Yeah, but that really doesn't matter with a .22 conversion. Lots of people shoot Ceiner/etc .22's through .223/5.56 barrels, it's just not as accurate as a dedicated upper. If I were to use it for .22, I wouldn't cut it anyway. The only way I would cut it is for the aforementioned dissipator.

Nothing definitive, but here is a link to an archived thread that describes the same barrel markings.

IIRC SP1 Barrels were marked with a S. So its probably a MP C Barrel that came off of a SP!?

Thanks, that's just how my barrel is marked, except for no "C" on the FSB. The only markings anywhere are those on the underside of the bbl.

The barrel is well over 25 years old.

That upper is a 1965 to 1967 vintage square forge upper. I'd do a nice vintage 604 if it were me. Just my 2 cents.

I misunderstood your statement about doing a .22 conversion. I thought you were considering a .22 upper, not just using a conversion kit. And you are right, lots of people use the kits. I have a Ciener kit, and they aren't particularly accurate, not the kit, but shooting .22's out of a .224 barrel.........and what fun are inaccurate rifles?

can you post a pic?  if the S is smaller and not inline, it could be SP1.

This.

Nice gathering of parts.  Shouldn't be too hard to cobble a nice 604 out of those pieces.  If Colt SP-1 S MP C only chamber is chrome lined.

The S is the same size, and is in line with the MP and C markings.

I will try to post a pick of the barrel later. I'm without a camera at the moment. I had the pics of the upper in my PB account.

The Chartered Industries of Simgapore sounds very feasible.  Similar to Elisco P MC P.  What's the FSB measure .625 or .750?  Would explain no proofs on upper receiver.  Nice 614 possibly!

It's a .625 FSB. As I said, the guy had boxes full of barrels and uppers, along with furniture and small parts. I just picked the bbl and upper at random, didn't know enough then to look for anything specific.

If only I had foreseen The Rise of Retro.

Sounds like an early SP1 barrel. Chrome-chamber only. I have a few regrets myself about not buying parts I know now to have been rare...like a 25 rnd mag, 601 and 602 uppers and a few other things like an Edgewater for $25... DOH!
