04ZREX, what manufacturer is your launcher? I've got some 203 parts coming to include a barrel, and would like to eventually to have all parts except a receiver. Well...........I'd take one of those too if I could find one, otherwise I'll try to machine my own. That's way down the road though.
I'll say upfront that I know "jacksquat" about launchers. That said, one of my concerns about machining my own receiver is that the m203 had a forged receiver. The best I could do, unless I stumble across a raw forging, is to machine one out of billet 7075. My concern would be its' ability to withstand the pressure. Is yours an M203 with a Shivak (sp) 37mm barrel, or was it manufactured as a 37mm launcer? |

The aluminum shells have a high pressure chamber with the propellant charge vented to a low pressure chamber immediately behind the payload. That's badass REX. Major bummer the fellow who owned Ohio Rapid Fire passed away. |

Not sure if Randy Shivak still makes/sells 37mm barrels, but it's not hard to lay one's hands on a Lewis Machine and Tool M203 Launcher minus the 40mm barrel and have it transferred to you just like a regular rifle/pistol/shotgun. Downside is that when you then Form 1 it for manufacture as a Destructive Device you have to mark it with name/city/state or your trust info. So if you have no plans to ever put a 40mm barrel on it short of the Zombie Apocalypse or TEOTWAWKI, buy it as a Title 1 firearm. Otherwise, just buy it in already registered DD form. Usually around $1800. Long Mountain Outfitters in Las Vegas can hook you up. Chalk payload practice rounds anywhere from $6-$9 each, don't pay more than $10. These are reloadable parts to do so available on GB but can be had cheaper elsewhere than most of those listings.
40mm rocks. Even if you only shoot it with practice rounds occasionally. |
The SAS loved the M203 as a force multiplier, which I understand. I just can't justify the extra weight just for the cool factor myself. I do think an XM148 clone in 37mm would be pretty cool though. I had a few parts like HGs and sight for a 203 awhile back, but talked myself out of it. Glad I did. It seems to be something that people build, get tired of, and sell 6 months later. Now the 'real deal' would be another matter, but even the rounds are each considered a DD. That would get hella-spensive in a hurry. Just my .02

Is there any benafits to a 40 over a 37mm ? Other than the fact it shoots HE grenades? Ha , and there is that. Pretty sure my HOA won't go for it. I've heard some people have bought HE rounds ? Extremely expensive and a 200$ per round |

Extremely expensive and a 200$ per round I have no first hand experience with the m203 and the 40mm HE Round but saw an episode of TacTV with Larry Vickers. He setup dummy targets in a formation and was shooting HE rounds dead center, the explosion and wound radius wasn't as impressive as I had imagined it would be. It looked fun as hell and he has the best job on the planet. Lucky SOB |
