The MARS Gun.  Notice the cutdown Stock

Off subject a bit - in the sixth picture down it looks like the guy on the right has a carabiner holding his knife sheath. Seems like a cool way to keep it handy yet allow it to swivel out of the way. Never seen that before.

What is the MARS gun? Why is the carbine stock shorter?

No sights either, had to "walk the rounds in"

Fastswift:  I've never seen that either.  The other guy looks to have an assortment of can openers on his carabiner.  Looks noisy.  These guys must be mopping up after action .

Jhud:  The MARS gun was an attempt at making an ultra shorty (PDW)  Mini Assault Rifle System (MARS)  It was 5.56 x 30.  3 prototypes were made by Colt by cutting
standard lowers in half through the magwell and re-welding.  The stocks look like Fiberite N1's cut flush at the lever lock.

SandWmand:  I think that's a Colt promo photo shoot on some range circa 64-65.  He does look like he has a pastrami sandwich and some cannoli waiting right off camera.

That pic is from a war museum in Vietnam, so it's a captured weapon,  probably lost along the years.

Nah, no problem there as there is much love for the Stoner on here I'm sure!

I wish somebody would make a proper clone but then again if they did I probably wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. Guess I'll have to make do with closest thing I can afford in the Robinson M96. I just wish that Robinson supported it with spare parts.

Looks like a Stoner63, and 50 grand might find you one. I think the last one I saw for sale was one of Reed Knights when he used to set a booth up at the KC Shoot. Hail, it was 40 or 45K back then.....about 1995 or so. If my memory serves and that timeline is correct, 50K probably wouldn't touch it now.

That's a Stoner 63A Carbine. The system can be configured many ways.  Last one I saw for sale couple years ago was $63K with goodies.

This is the closest Non-NFA offering.

Love Stoners. That MARS carbine looks doable IMO. I wonder if you could get it to run on .30 carbine (blowback?) and it might be best to start with an 80% lower and do the chop first. Wish I could get a better look at that upper / rear sight assy.

Another seller on GB had a MARS magazine for sale for a long time.  I don't see it now.  Pics and info can be found in TBR Volume 2

Accurange:  That's USAF PJ Bob LaPointe with a Gau-5.

Big Rix:  Great info !!!

Looks like an LMT rear BUIS. I thought Crane was the first to chop them - looks like the early flat tops didn't run as far back. Also, check out the chopped port door. Interesting.

I got to fire a MARS during the Colt Factoy Armorer course range day in 1996 and slipped a fired case in my pocket.  Here it is compared to a fired 5.56 round.

Unlike the GB round, mine has a Winchester .223 Rem headstamp

Which is shorter and/or most effective - the MARS round or .224 BOZ? Interesting concept that seems to have gone nowhere, likely because in a LEO situation, a standard 5.56 covers a wider range of duties. FA is less likely - most departments sticking with SA weapons. I really don't see any advantage other than recoil impulse and controllability in FA fire.

Wow...that is a tiny cartridge.  At the time if I remember the rage was PDW weapons.  The whole, "Over penetration indoors" thing.   I think eventually
9mm was found to be as bad or worse than 556.  Something like that.  Hence the new concept weapons.

Not positive but I think the TBR V2 says the rear sights were cut-down, carry handle sights.

Sandsock:  I bet that was interesting to shoot such a rare prototype.

Robinson was close...so close.   Well, for a Stoner purist, not that close...but...  If only he'd have had the love that so many of us do for the Stoner.  The safety, the charging handle, the buttstock, the sights.  So close.  Oh, AND THE GODDAMN BELT FEED THAT HE PROMISED.    Sorry...a peve of mine.

I want a Stoner Clone so bad that I was just looking at airsoft guns on line.  It's a sickness and I need an intervention.  I'm probably in the wrong place for that though.

I wonder if the .221 Fireball might be the most viable?   The tricky part would be chopping and rewelding he receivers.  While the lower could be duplicated like the original,  the upper might be better to shorten the back and reweld the rear lug.  I imagine Colt started with blank forgings.  The bolt carrier would simply need to be shortened from the rear.  Mags might be tricky to bend but maybe there sre some floating around still?

I think the FN90 pretty much nailed the limited PDW market during that era.  I fired one a couple months later during the FN demo st Winston P Wilson and was very impressed.   I can't imagine however ever needingor wanting to buy one.  Colt was desperate for a success back then after the tragically executed 2000 pistol, pissing on then off (via biycott) the American gunowners and further PC bastardization of the SP1 in the wake of the AWB.  PDs rushed to buy ARs or get DoD M16A1s in the wake of the North Hollywood shootout, so the MARS really unfortunately didn't stand a chance.  In terms of a lower recoil PDW, I'm building a 605 themed 9mm like Sgt911s.

Robinson promised the belt feed kit, never produced it and then discontinued the M96. This all reminds me of a gun show me and my dad went to back in the late
90s (I think). I spotted an M96 and walked over to take a look and drool all over it. It was a gun show here in Arkansas and Robinson Arms had a booth set up. They
were also an importer of the VEPR line of firearms and had a few of them too. Dad and I looked everything over and the guy finally pried the M96 out of my paws and
we talked about the belt feed setup that they were coming out with. Dad gave them a copy of his FFL and I told the guy that I'd be in touch with them for an M96 and
we walked off. I swear this next part is true:  a few days later on my next day off I went to my Dad's gun store. Dad was laughing and told me that I'd never guess what
had just happened. Robinson had boxed up several VEPRs and an M96 and sent them to Dad's store via C.O.D.!!! Dad refused to accept them and told the UPS guy
to send them back. I wanted one but not that soon!! I waited and waited to buy one, watching to see when the belt feed system would be released but it never did.
Sometimes I wish I had bought one, but probably best that I didn't. Just always wanted a Stoner!!!

I suspicion those are aero scouts - blue platoon.  By reason of their ragged-assed appearance and lack of need for noise discipline.

The firing port weapon actually was listed originally as having a collapsible wire stock. A buddy of mine and I built one back in the 80's. It had a short block on the shorter than carbine buffer tube, with a duplicate of the M3 greasegun wire stock that ran through the block and alongside the joint between upper and lower receiver joint.
