Has anyone ran into one side darker than the other? Maybe it was just a production run difference.

Kinda neat----and I guess you can only look at one side at a time.

Thanks in advance.

That is cool!  Where did you get those?  They look awesome, I am no expert so no idea on coloration.  But I seriously dig those!

From what I've seen, color variances are relatively common. In fact, I have seen one handguard that was about 85% the lighter color (in area) and a big blotch, about 15% the darker shade.  But generally speaking... on the handguards, the lighter color, as shown in your photo on the right, seems to be the more common color on the handguards.  The buttstocks and grips are ususally quite a bit darker.

That's why they started painting them green.

I really need to stay out of 601 and XM177 threads.

I'm not even finished with my first retro - a 603 and I'm already catching myself thinking about another build

At a minimum, you need an XM177 variant to keep the 603 company.

That's interesting.  I've seen a good bit of variance from one set to another, but the pairs I've seen have been fairly well matched to one another in general shade.
Did you get the set together?

Regardless, if you have original handguards on both sides of your 601, you're in a fairly elite group--perfectly matched or not!

BRD was never as bad as retroBRD

That XM177 would be my first NFA item, I hear they multiply too.

Thanks. Yeah I got these two and three others from Numrich-----and subsequently they now own one of my kidneys.

John T----much appreciated on your post above. I bet you've seen quite a few of these.

They came as a pair but I would have to say the were each picked from a pile/box/pallet. Lot of use on the left side (light) guard-----the right was pretty mint.

BTW the dark one really matches the stock pretty well.

And of course you WILL need one without a forward assist - 604, XM177 610 variant, 630, 652 ... Well, you get the idea!
RBRD is madness!

Nice job glossing them up. Did you clear coat?

Nice.  Was a time when most only had one side or the other.  Appears to me that the right handers tear up the left side and the left handers tear up the right side hence more rights than lefts.

I have often wondered, are these made from the same stuff used to make "Coltwood" stocks?

The light one's shiny surface (gel coat?) was shot----had to spray some lacquer on it & block sand w/ 1200. The dark one only needed a quick waxing.
