Just received a Colt rifle and suspect its a conglomoration of parts from different eras.  Hoping this group can tell me if its as simple as the upper and lower coming from two different guns, or if its more of a 'project' with parts from all over...

The A2 upper has a CM mark just in front of the windage knob on the right side, the pins are large, I don't see any other markings here.
The barel is 16" and is the same diameter from the front sight forward (I haven't taken the hg off yet).  It is marked 'CMP 5.56 NATO  1/9 HBAR'
The fixed front sight has 'H2 I2' stamped on the right side.

The lower is marked AR15 A2, Cal 223, Sporter II.  Serial # SP 302xxx.
It is wearing a fixed rifle stock with a rifle buffer/tube.

I'd like to make (slight) changes with original parts to bring this back to resemble something that Colt sold over the counter as a complete rifle.  The first thing I'm thinking about doing is finding an original carbine stock and removing the rifle one.

Anyone with any info you can share is appreciated.  i've been reading up on the FAQs and other online DBs but there is a lot of contradictory info out there.

Thanks.

Nate

Post a pic, but it sounds like a 16" Colt H Bar.

sounds like a SP II. i don't KNOW that they made  SP II carbines, but it IS a Colt barrel ,and Colt SP II upper (large pivot pin) , so worst case someone turned a SP II rifle into a H-Bar (heavy barrel)  carbine.
and i'm thinking its gonna be bigger than .750" under the guards, perhaps even .936"

My colt ar15a2 sporter 2 came as a 20 inch rifle with rifle stock. Most likely in order to put it back to original you would need to change the barrel not stock. If you call colt they will give you the info or Post pictures & we can give you a lot more info.

The Sporter II marked models were very few:

R6420 16" carbine - had skinny 16" barrel and A1 rear sight, not A2 style.
R6500 20" rifle - had 20" A2 profile barrel and A1 rear sight, not A2 style.
R6510 20" rifle - same as R6500, but in .222Rem for export.

1/9 HBAR 16" barrels didn't come out until the later AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine (R6721) and AR-15A3 Competition HBAR (R6731).

Colt did so many weird combinations that it's still remotely possible that is somehow a factory gun - but the early (302xxx) serial makes it very unlikely in my opinion.  More probably it was rebarreled sometime after the mid 1990s.  Only a call to Colt to get the original factory configuration will tell you for sure.
