Picked up a Colt 4 X 20 knock-off scope at a gun show. With iron sights I can shoot a 1" group at 100 yds. With the scope on I am lucky to get them into a 6" group. Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

I know I'm gonna sound like a smartass for saying this, but it needs to be said. Don't buy knock-offs. You generally get what you pay for. The extra money spent on quality is almost always worth it.

Did you zero it ?
Start at 25yds. and work your way up.

The mount is crap. That goes for the originals too.
