I have an A1 upper, nothing retro, but by rear sight has two equal sized holes. One is marked 0-2, the other one has no markings.

What is supposed to be in an A1? Different sized like A2?

Am I missing something or is it just a cheap sight in there?

Figured you guys would know

A true A1 sight has two holes of the same size, about mid-way between the A2's small and large holes. But they ate drilled st different heights above the axis so one is used at close range, 0-200 yds., and the other for longer ranges, 200+ yds.

There are cheap aftermarket units that are drilled at the same height though.

Thanks! Can an A1 be retrofitted with an A2 one? Does it fit?

A1 and A2 rear apertures are interchangeable.  some like the larger A2 aperture for closer shooting.

It will fit but you lose a little windage adjustment range.
