Hey all,

Wes from Canada.

New to the site.

I'm a huge fan of retro rifles and military surplus. Finally building my first AR15A1 rifle, can't wait to get her assembled.

This site is awesome! This retro section is a wealth of knowledge.

Just saying hello and introducing myself.

Glad to be a member.

Cheers!

Well, at least you phrased it correctly - building your FIRST... cause believe me, once you get started, it will not be your last!

Welcome to the forum (and watch out for Morg308 - he will lead you down the path to ruin, M1Sniper - he totally enables money reduction activities, Jhud - he only preaches perfection, snipertewg - its always the NEXT thing for him, gordog - cause he will having you collecting retro lint and stuff like that, ... i am running out of space and time...)

Oh hell - just run away while you can!

Welcome to retroland.  If you can get your hands on some CS marked surplus rifle stocks you should easily be able to trade for most your other retro needs. Hope your new build shoots great.

Oh hell - just run away while you can!

This is probably very good advice unless you need an outlet for your hard earned coins.  Are you married?  I ask,  because most here know all the tricks for hiding purchases from wifey.  One would be amazed at the time and coins easily spent with this hobby.  Another word of advice,  don't keep / save your recepits!  $1K spent can quickly turn to $6K spent but you will have something pleasurable to show for it.  Gain something / lose something - lose something / gain something simple Physics 101.

Hey, the OP was nice enough to make his post in English... maybe he's practicing.

Besides, it's spelled 'eh'.

Sorry; thanks for pointing that out...  I went through the American Public Skrool System, after all...

Welcome!

Just curious, how does one go about building an AR up in The Great White North...

Like gun laws and stuff, eh?

It is spelled "eh"

That's the official Canadian translation for the American "huh" lol

Thanks guys.

I'm a few parts short. I found some A2 upper stock screws on here already, I'm going to have to chop down an A2 to fit my A1 buttstock.

Can anyone tell me the proper length of an actual A1 screw?

I'll post some pics soon. The barrel, upper and lower are all in the mail to me right now.

All I have is stock, triangle grips and a giant bag of parts lol

To the other question about building up here and laws:

The only part of the AR15 in Canada that is deemed a firearm is the lower receiver. Any other parts including a complete barreled upper are not even considered a gun.
When our gun laws went retarded back in the early 90's the AR15 became restricted. Prior to 1976 civilians could legally even own full auto without even breaking a sweat.

So basically in a nut shell, anyone with a restricted licence can own an AR15 but you can only shoot them at gun clubs/ranges vice taking it out to the bush to hunt with or target shoot like we can with say the M14 etc.

The thing is we only adopted the AR15 (the Colt C7) back in the mid 80's as a military service rifle. So most of the "retro" spare parts you find up here tend to be of the A2 variety. A1 stuff is more scarce but they are around.

Our laws make no sense but then again, do any gun laws ever make sense?

By the way, congrats on your senate telling that Socialist leader of yours where to stick his gun control bill

The A1 stock screw is exactly half the length of the A2 one.  If you measure the A2 screw, cut it in half and you'll be good to go.  Half of the entire screw and not just the threaded portion.

Excellent.

Thanks very much for the info Sir!

Welcome to the forum! We have several members from Canadia eh. I used to go to Niagra Falls all the time (great place to take women on a cheap date if you're close) and my Uncle's family has an Island up there off Lake Superior. If things get too crazy here, I could really see emigrating to Canada. There's a lot of things up there that are more common sense -like the lack of TV censoring and judges throwing stupidity suits out of court.

Aye, everyone has the good the bad and the ugly I suppose.

I travel to the US a lot with work. I love it down there.

Grandparents used to have a trailer near Plattsburgh but on the Vermont side. Spent many a great summer fishing on lake Champlain.

Make no mistake though, I literally drool over some of the firearms freedoms you guys have compared to ours.

As long as you guys get that Socialist clown out of the White House with the quickness I may be looking to retire down South when it's time to hang up the boots lol ;)

This is a great site by the way, great people, great info and good times so far! Thanks!

I'm jealous!  I'd love to have one if you find an extra on a deal sometime. Would really compliment my C-7.  I'd surely trade a nice set of Colt M-16A1 furniture or H&R M-16A1 furniture for one even a little rough around the edges.  Apologies if out of line but been quite some time since I've seen any even at auction.

Alright, here she is, my first "retro" build.

603 LM Marked A1 Upper.

DTI 20" Government (A2) Barrel with 3 prong flash suppressor of course :D (Again, could not find pencil barrel)

A1 butt stock.

A1 grip.

Triangular A1 hand guards.

DPMS Lower :( But swapped out guts for surplus mil-spec parts (couldn't find anything close to proper with our gay laws being what they are and the shortage of everything AR at the moment)

Hoping to get her out to the range next weekend :D

I'm happy with it. It's the AR I always wanted and man is she light in weight!

i know the import/export  laws can be weird (we had trouble getting a side window for a non-U.S. Smart Car, no one wanted to ship it to the U.S.) but do Diamaco parts show up  at all?
parts unique to  a Canadian, or a Canadian export  rifle like a Elcan, a different length fixed stock (a "bantam"?), grenade launcher/bipod mounts , rings, or a carry handle ( i know they're not issued, they're a "option")?
USGI issued items appear here (usually in towns that house military bases, go figure) but do you ever see them up there?

and nice retro start, you ever think about a 80% lower refigured to A-1 specs?
can you make your own firearms?
would it be legal to ship a hunk of aluminum to Canada?

Just wait until you do lay hands on a pencil barrel.  You're going to wonder how you ever thought an A2 barrel seemed light.

This. The standard A1 is just about the best all-around rifle a guy could have, and iin 605 configuration it's damn near perfect. Nice build BTW !  Welcome to the forum. Pull up a chair and get a beer out of the fridge. I think we're out of Black Label and Labatts Blue though...

That's so true.

It's so damned light even with the A2 barrel but the only weight I feel setting it off balance is that extra steel at the muzzle lol

I will keep up the search for a pencil barrel.

I will keep tracking getting my hands on a proper machined lower as well.

I never though of the 80% option. I'll have to talk to the import guru up here.

Everything down south is out of stock though currently and the ones who have them in stock probably won't have export set up for little brother up North lol

The search continues!

Thanks a lot guys!

lol Labbatt what? That stuff is overpriced junk.

I drink Pabst or Old Milwaukee.

Pretty sad when locally produced beer is more expensive than the "imports"

I like the cheap 'Merican beer, it tastes like drunk and costs not much lol
