The next build I have in mind ( I don't have to finish one before I start another, do I?) is a mid length XM177.

Very much like the one I have seen pictured so many times made by CrackedCornish.

I am thinking of making my own slip over faux moderator out of aluminum.

I found the original plans for the colt moderator and came up with outside dimensions.

Here is the drawing I sketched out for my first attempt without slots.

I still need to find the dimensions for the length of the threads.

Next attempt will be a two piece version like CrackedCornish's that has fake slots. Seen in this thread.

Question for the machinists, how do you cut flash hider slots?

This is the only post I could find on the subject.

I have access to my friends machine shop but I like to have all my ducks in a row before I go over there so I don't wear out my welcome.

I'm just a dummy, but I cut my slots with a Woodruff keyseat cutter...

The only woodruff key cutters I can find are not tapered.

Not sure that would match the profile.

Any thoughts?

If you don't want to build a fake moderator, IM me and I'll mail you the one I pulled off this rifle.  I've got no use for it.

Anyone out there have info on the Del-Ton 16"  Mid length LW barrel?  Wondering what the dia. and length of the barrel is forward of the FSB.

I've got a Bushmaster slipover FH that might just work...

I said I was just a dummy!...

OK, in all seriousness, my local sharpening service (end mills, key cutters, reamers, drills, etc) will grind any profile I need on my end mills, reamers, etc...There should be a service in your area as well...They may even be able to provide the cutter...

BTW: I make my XM607 moderators in the same manner as your sketch...Works great!
