I notice that the case deflector on my A2 puts a small dent in the side of the spent case. This could impact the capability to reload these. If the case deflector were removed as in an A1 upper, is the spent case directed in a dangerous direction? Or, is the case deflector mainly of benefit to left-handed shooters? BTW I'm a right hander.

Dents to the brass will mostly iron out when the case is resized.
The brass deflector does not really dent casings like the edge of the ejection port. If your brass is getting a sharp edged dent at the mid point of the casing, I would suspect the ejection path is striking the rear edge of your port. The rifle is holding onto the expended brass until it hits the open port...not really a super big problem, as messing with the ejector timing can be frustrating. Something to try first is simply sticking a small square of velcro to the brass deflector. The "fuzzy" side of the velcro will soften the impact of brass being thrown as well as keep the deflector from having unsightly brass marks. Running an A1 upper without brass deflector is not unsafe. It throws empties out towards the right rear. If you shoot lefty, the casings clear your face (barely) and is not really noticable unless you completely focus on it. |

This. Deflector was for LH shooters. Slickside doesn't dent brass. Velcro sounds good. I just use electrical tape but mostly just to keep from scratching receiver. |

Also to add that I read an opinion on another gun board to the effect that with a little experimentation, the velcro can be configured to cause the brass to drop nearly to your side. The poster made the point that this increased safety, as hot brass flying onto another shooter could cause them to involuntarily flinch or move their rifle in an unsafe manner or direction. |
