I have been trying to build a gun on the cheep I have decided to give it a Retro Ish treatment.
I set a goal to build a fun gun for under $700 during the panic. Just to prove it is possible. I may have to trade parts to make that goal, but thats part of the fun. I have been doing most of my shopping in the local internet classifieds. So far I have this to show for it. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps92493f6c.jpg From all of this and a CMMG lower that I have I am going to use these pieces. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zpsa40771f4.jpg Entry stock, A1 grip, Carbine length triangle hand guards from Model 1, 14.5" Bushmaster HBAR that needs to be recrowned, Slip over flash hider that I pulled out of the bottom of a parts box at my LGS, front sight base from another parts box, Triangle .750" hand guard retainer, Chrome Colt bolt. Still on the hunt for an A1 C7 or A2 upper, bolt carrier, gas tube, possibly a flat slip ring. I have found plenty but not for the price I want to pay. The hunt continues, I know it won't be truly retro, but I hope "Ish" will still be fun to shoot. |

I am seeking advise on my cheep barrel that I first posted about here.
Damaged Barrel? I am not thinking it will be as handy as it looks with that HBAR barrel. I'm sending the barrel out to get recrowned and am thinking of getting it re profiled. With all the parts I have on hand, I want to keep the .750" size at the sight base and I think the fake moderator would work best with size at the front end. Questions: Should I just have the size under the hand guards cut down or the entire barrel? Does anyone have dimensions for the different profile barrels? Light weight and standard? Some pics with the Model 1 hand guards. Flat slip ring and C7 upper in coming. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps74a0ca65.jpg http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps7543ed85.jpg The HBAR part actually hits the inside of the hand guards. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps3b94a542.jpg My home spun attempt at recrowning. Might work but I decided to send it out any way. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps95e3e761.jpg |

Mock up of what I have so far.
http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps139eb2a1.jpg C7 upper Still missing Bolt Carrier Firing Pin Cam Pin Firing Pin Retainer Gas Tube Port Door Forward Assist Really liking how this mutt is coming along. |

Thanks Booze for the upper, it really helped kick this build into high gear.
Now I just need to scuff up the lower to match. And yes, I forgot the charging handle and some small parts. I ordered all the parts to finish my stripped bolt from Model 1 when I ordered the handguards. Installing the ejector for the first time, without special tools was interesting and nerve wracking. I just knew I would never find them if I slipped and it shop across the shop. |

Converted the front sight base to set screws.
Most use 8x36x1/8" but I went with 8x32x1/8" due to availability. Drilled with a #29 bit. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zpse354b08b.jpg 10x32x1/8" for the bottom screw under the sling swivel. Drilled with a #21 bit. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zpsd978dd59.jpg I did not do, like the National Match guys, put any flats on the barrel to engage the set screws. I'm hoping they will grab the pin grooves and I will still be able to adjust them side to side before locking them down. Staked and Lock Tited. |

In an effort to lower the weight on the front of this carbine I am following this thread I came across.
Garage Gunsmithing This guy has the model Bushmaster that my barrel originally came from and was able to drop over one pound. I'll let you know how it turns out. |
|
PLEASE don't ruin your nice build by doing what that guy did.
Spend the extra dough to get it done right. It really shouldn't cost that much to get your barrel reprofiled if its already in for a crown. Coming along really nice though, I love the triangle carbine HGs! |

Linky is generic "armorer's tool". There may be better deals than Brownells. It serves the same purpose and maybe more than the barrel extension wrench you have illustrated. I use the clamshell to torque and untorque barrels rather than mar the barrel with a vise. The clamshell is sufficient for the amount of force needed. I also have a "barrel extension" wrench in my toolbox, I have used it for flash hiders, not for torquing barrels. But your mileage may vary. |

My plan has been to use one of my other bolt carriers to test this gun out but I was able to trade some ammo for this awesome looking BCG. http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zpsa76d9477.jpg http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zpsfe666d26.jpg http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss208/BigRix/null_zps5b418159.jpg No markings at all. Any one care to venture a guess as to who made this thing? being semi auto and modern staking, my guess would be RRA or Youngs. |

So I'm getting close to assembly and test firing. Anyone have a suggestion for armorers tools to tighten the barrel nut? Clamshell block? Barrel clamp? Barrel extension tool? I've "built" several AR's but always used factory assembled uppers. If you want, I'll bring my tools down next week. |

I've never seen a pic on the net of a Young MFG carrier, that has the forward assist notches cut all the way to the dust cover cutout, like this one ^^^ has.

It handles pretty well with the short stock but feels front heavy with the HBAR and faux moderator.
My nose touches the charging handle and the rear sight is more like a ghost ring. Should be great for run and gun, short range work. It seems more balanced with the full size stock on it. When I was hauling them out to my side yard for a photo shoot I could tell immediately that it is heavier than my SP1. I wonder how much it would cost to get this barrel turned down and re parked? |

They used to make lead weights that fit in the void on trapdoor stocks, intent was to balance them. Not sure that would help or hinder. I like the way she turned out. the entry stocks don't have a trapdoor. mine did seem kind of hollow so maybe you could fill it with shot or something. |
