Hey.

There is a ton of retro info on this site.  Posts and stickies !!

As a newbie, this section of the forum has been a big help in feeding my BRD.

My question is, has there or is there a BIG reference book that would have all
of the different models and variations with histories and a ton of pictures ??

Many thanks in advance,
BC

The Black Rifle I and II are probably the best books on the AR-15. Unfortunately, they aren't cheap.

Sometimes you can find a cheaper copy on eBay.

What the other guys said, The Black Rifle is the best game in town. For truly Retro stuff, the original TBR is best.

However, it has some errors, suppositions, and deficiencies. Given the amazing overall quality of the book, the lack of foot- or source notes is frustrating. There is a bibliiography.

Sometimes Amazon.com has a used copy cheap, also, through the small booksellers that advertise on there. I have plugged many gaps in my Collector Grade bookshelf with Amazon used books.

There probably is room for an "AR15 prototypes and variations" book. There is very very useful information about production posted on DTIC, including lots on when particular running changes were made. There were over 200 changes made between the prototype and the first M16s being produced, and hundreds more over the next few years.

Parts that were removed from the military production line, like the early buffer, soldiered on for a very long time in civilian SP1s. (The buffer change was to reduce the cyclic rate, which is not an issue on a semi gun. It also reduced production cost, which is why the semi guns only got the old buffers until they were used up, sometime in the 70s).
