Thought I'd put this here since you guys are more historically accurate. Also AR Discussions sucks.
Anyway, I'm curious about painting some rack numbers on my stock. Is there a particular kind of stencil I should use? Just regular Krylon rattle-can paint? How would they be painted on a CAR stock? The plastic kind, not the aluminum ones, if that matters. Gonna use the old rack number from my FN M16A2 in basic.

Pipe cleaner bent in half to form a swab (or Q-tip) dipped in paint and then hand written on the stock. I have personnally seen numbers being done in such a way. Not all armorers were anal about the process and did not use stencils. Seen that on rifle stocks as well. Locked up in my safe is an M1 Carbine with TWO different rack numbers, one on the bottom of the forearm and the other on the bottom flat of the grip, one green and one white. Presumably so could be read whist in the rifle rack. Go figure. |

Most all CAR rack numbers I've seen were either hand written or a label gun sticker. Usually at the top of the stock body, close to the tube.
I've had a couple written in blue paint like Andouille describes. I also have an acetate covered alum. CAR stock with the number scribed onto the side of the stock. |
| The only order we have is that they should be a color that doesn't stand out. No bright reds or anything. Some armories use stencils, some just use a paint marker. It all depends on how the armory chief wants it done. I think the best looking ones are done with a 1" stencil in OD green flat spray paint. Marine armorer for 4 years. |

DivOrd 8000.2b has the info you need :) It's technically NOT up to the OrdChief...EVERYTHING you do in that Armory is covered in that Order. But you are essentially correct use a "tactical color" on the LEFT side of the stock using 2" stencils (for A2/A4s) M4s we used smaller stencils on the flats above the lever. Sorry had a flashback there.... Retired Regt. Ordnance Chief Semper Fi... |

If you had an A2, I would say one of those embossed plastic label makers.
The post Vietnam/Pre911 Military was anal about painting weapons, even rack numbers. Especially a basic training post where the weapons were turned in at the end of every cycle to get gauged. |
| Most of the issued weapons I've ever had, were either marked with paint marker, or dymo label. On the M4s I was issued the rack number usually was paint marker-ed on the sides of the stock in that flat area below the tube. One I had a long time ago had the rack number on the mag well. |

In the late 90's, early 2000's, we used paint pens for the M4's, to include accessories, mainly the Aimpoints and PAQ-4's, then PEQ-2's. I've seen both green and blue used in those cases. Who knows what different units did in Vietnam with regard to the carbines.
I imagine the climate there wreaked havoc on any marking system. For the short time of only one month that I spent in Panama, the jungle even started to rot my K-Pot back at the barracks on Ft. Sherman. |
