This is the most retro US military firearm I own:

US M1836 flintlock

The US M1836 Pistol was the last of the single-shot martial flintlock pistols to be authorized and contracted for by the US government.
Between 1836 and 1844 a total of 41,000 of the pistols were ordered from Asa Waters of Millbury, MA and Robert Johnson of Middleton, CT.
The guns were .54 caliber, smoothbores and utilized a permanently attached swivel ramrod mounted under the muzzle.
Waters delivered more than 50% of the guns ordered, with Johnson delivering a total of 18,000.
It was the primary handgun used by the United States during the War with Mexico.
Many were sent to the various states as part of their annual allotment of arms under the Militia Act of 1808.
Most were then later converted from their original flint to the percussion ignition system in the 1850s for use once again during the Civil War.

Well, heck. Since we're not limiting ourselves to ARs, here's something I picked up last week.
I've been cleaning up an old Winchester 97 for Morg308 (well, for his dad, technically) and have come to really appreciate the design (has there ever been another designer in the same class as Mr. Browning??).  So I decided I'd like one for myself––but in riot config.

Thought about a Norinco, but I'd prefer buying American––even if it's OLD American.
Problem is, I didn't want to pay for an original riot gun, and I refuse to chop up a nice one.  So I was excited to find this one.  The seller said the wood was refinished and had a deformed rubber pad added, so I knew I won't feel guilty re-re-finishing it after cutting it down slightly.  And then the guy said it had a slight bulge in the barrel at around 25", so suddenly I could justify cutting it to 20".  $290, and it was mine.

When it arrived, I realized it was a great deal. Not a single crack in the wood, 50%+ bluing (now more like brownish-grey), beautiful bore, and tight, sharp machining.  Internally, it doesn't even look broken in.
Considering she was born in 1906, she has not been used much.

Now all I need is downtime to finish the project.

Speaking of beat-up old things, the mutton-leg case it came packed in could definitely use some love.  Haven't decided yet what I can do with that.

This is the only forum I know of where you will see pics of an SAS jeep, flintlocks, an AR 180 and a 601 all in the same thread! My pic posting abilities are compromised, but I'll try and find something in my photobucket album. Hope you are feeling better YF.

My first build - old pic:

My favorite retro pack - an M1952. SF used these in VN.

And a retro SMG. Anyone know what this is? I have plans to build a semi version.

I sure hope you get to feeling better.  I am happy to see if I can help.

I have a wedding anniversary coming up soon, and my wife said she wanted a gorgeous ring.
Which one do you think she will like best?

Here ya go, my first gun, got her when I was 10 after
Working 3 months in my dads office , I think I got screwed on that one!
A Ruger 10/22  in a old ram line folder.back then 22s didn't look like the military rifles
they  have now, so this was as close as it got. And ya, that electrical tape is
Holding it all together .

The scratches on the trigger are from a BMF activator .
You could crank it like Gatling gun

A retro pic from way back when I was a YoungGunner.

Wish I still had that rifle!  That was very early VN-era and I terminated a lot of Godless Commies with that thing––weak-eyed, cross-shouldered stance and all.
Of course, much of my success was probably due to the sniper scope.  Waterproof, fog proof, shock proof, 100% light transmission and zero-glare.  It was only limited by its 1X magnification and noticeable lack of a reticle.

I believe that rifle was also the subject of my very earliest gunsmithing.  I borrowed my mother's sewing shears, cut off those strings and significantly increased the weapon's effective range.

Ol G I'm really diggin the shoes.  They have definately brought back some memories.  I couldn't get a new pair until the soles were showing toes.  I had and still have my Daisy model 21.  It's probably easily worth more than most any of my AR's.  Looks like a nice fishing hole in your back yard.
