I posted some pictures of my H&R upper in MrM1A1's excellent thread on GM Hydramatic Uppers.  Here's some more pictures...

Now, I'm not sure that my upper was actually manufactured by H&R, it could have been Hydramatic.  But here's how I built this upper into a completed rifle -

The Upper as bought:

And here's how it looked for a few months with an NDS partial fence lower while I was putting the first few rounds down range:

After tiring of the mis-match between the excellent worn finish on the upper and the excellent (but like-new and completely different) finish on the NDS lower, I tried putting a "battlefield pick-up" finish on the NDS lower.  However, a couple hours of scotchbright and steel wool does not equal ~40 years of actual wear and tear.  That, plus the fact that some of these old uppers probably were not anodized as well as NDS's, did not produce a matching finish.

So, along with the help of Braceman and Victor (at US anodizing), I put together an 80% receiver.

At this point, it was pointed out to me that I had committed the error of having bracemen machine a partial-fence lower for me when I should have left it as a full-fence.  Research Fail.  I guess, without much thought I just continued with the fence type that had been using.  In any case, I think braceman did an excellent job machining the 80% A2 lower into an 80% A1 partial fence lower.  I, of course, finished the internal machining after Victor had done the anodizing on the lower (and a spare charging handle).
The s/n was chosen to indicate my personal build number (my second AR-type).

Here it is today:

I want to thank braceman, Victor, somebob, and mx56 for all their help which I needed to put this together.

Still to do - a better fake sear pin.  Maybe if I have a little extra time this weekend.

looks nice.  what did you use to finish up the 80%?  what did you use to finish the fire bare aluminum in the fire control pocket?

I did a little after hours work in the machine shop at the company I work at.  They've got all the machinery that I could ever need.

I tried finishing an 80% lower on my drill press in my garage and that just didn't go well at all.  Fortunately, that was a raw 80% receiver from Tactical Machining and I hadn't had braceman or Victor do any work on it.

I haven't put any finish on the internal machined surfaces yet.  I plan on doing some additional paintwork (faux sear pins) and will do some painting in there at that time.

Superb. I would not have noted the fence issue. Obvious that a lot of effort and care went into that one.

Send an IM to braceman. John does good work on 80% lowers. He engraved and reprofiled my GM lower, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. You have to be ok with milling out the fcg pocket, as braceman only does 80% lowers. If you want a 100% finished lower engraved, I suggest you buy a Nodak lower and send it to Ident for engraving.

ETA: Here's a couple pics of my still unfinished GM lower that John (braceman) did for me. Now that I have my GM upper I am will be sending the upper and lower out to Victor for color matching in the next week or two.

Both GM and H&R used A1 birdcage flash hiders on their M16A1's.

Acrylic paint on the fake sear pin works well.

Very very cool, it is nice to see the different colors of these things.  I like the way the roll marks turned out, if you look at the picture full size it looks like  material was pushed up a little bit and they have a "real" roll mark look to them.

It looks really good –– I love the BTDT look.

I probably only noticed this because I've been there a bunch of times, but the spelling on the town should be "Worcester, Mass.". Not a knock, just a friendly heads up

Nice build Velt  All that's missing is a worn down to the gold anodizing CH with the six dimples, which I happen to have one lying around in my parts bin

That's a good looking build.  You did great on the "aging" finish of the lower.

I personally prefer the look of a partial fence lower.

Your upper and lower look great. Your furniture is too new, as well as your sling. Pick up a frayed sling and worn buttstock and handguards. And don't forget to bring the finish down on the barrel. Not being critical, but it would be physically impossible to have that much receiver wear and the rest of the rifle looking new.
