New guy checking in......Im in New Zealand so I can have stuff your US Gubberment considers inappropriate.
Ive been lurking here for quite some time, learning and enjoying the pictures but its time I put my hand up.
I have an old Sudanese AR10, all original minus the auto sear and selector in what might be described as 'battlefield pickup' condition, theres also a lovely early-mid 1970s SP1 in my safe and a couple of L1A1 SLRs, again all original.
Im particularly enjoying the AR10 at the moment, even in NZ these rifles are not common but at least they all have their original recievers, mine is particularly early #00076# and I know #75 is currently for sale in my town, still select fire too.
As soon as I work out how to post pics ill do that...

Please post pics of the AR10!!!  Please!!

You NZ folk have all the luck.  I saw where SIGAmt's seemed common enough to be used as animal control rifles.

Yes ill get AR10 pics, im not that pooter savvy but ill get there.
There were alot of SIG rifles hacked into chopper guns in the 80s when the FALs started to wear out but the SIG rifles were fairly hard to get bits for out here so when the SIGs started giving up the shooters wanted the old FALs back, SP1s were a popular choice for chopper shooters too with the carry handle and FSB cut off and vairious optics mounted on the remains.

Theres quite alot of original M14s here too

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of prices would you pay locally for, say, an FN, or an AR 10...or AR 15 for that matter?

oh, and a standard ARFCOM "pics or it didn't happen" statement.

FNs tend to sell privately for around nz$1500 to $2k so thats around US$1200-1800 or so, theres cheaper and more expensive rifles of course. Tidy G1s tend to be over nz$3000 but theres far more ex army L1A1s around for around nz$1000 and up.

My AR10 cost a huge amount of cash, US$440 but they generally tend to go for around nz$2000. AR10 #75 is currently for sale for $5k and that one is still fullauto.

I have a Sterling AR180 inbound now that was $nz1500 which is pretty decent for a scarce rifle and AR15s have always been very expensive and sought after in NZ, it was common for clean SP1s and any kind of Colt A2 to sell for around $5k untill recently, now the market is being flooded with kind of cheap but still overpriced Norinco ARs and Canadian made NEA AR type rifles which are around $2k brand new.
Theres no kit guns of any type here so parts for anything are always in demand and fairly hard to get.

I just found out that "chopper guns" are used from helicopters.  Yessiree, down there it is perfectly acceptable to harvest deer from a helicopter.

I have a dream vacation I'd like to take to NZ - a long, backpacking trip. My buddy spent some time down there with his rugby club, and he and his girlfriend went backpacking - said the Kiwi birds tore the shit out of the tent and their packs if they left anything unattended. I still want to go - probably one of the most beautiful places on earth, and I understand the people are real friendly, even to Americans. (Hey, we may deserve the bad rap we get, but we aren't all bad.)

Trilux, first, welcome to the forum!  Always nice to add some international perspective to the board.

We will be waiting patiently (well, semi-patiently) for the photos––especially of the AR10.
Personally, I would love to add a Sudanese variant to my little collection!

Thank you Olgunner, Ive read your AR10 posts with interest.

Ive seen the AR10s at Guncity, theyre in my town and dont have a great reputation for honesty but they have some interesting guns if your willing to pay absolute top dollar for them, you really need to know what your looking at because you can never trust the salesman.
They have a Belgian FAL that I really want at the moment but ive just committed myself to the AR180.
Id love to know how many AR10s were imported in the 1980s, chopper shooters used them alot and i guess alot disappeared into collections but they do turn up often.
They usually look very scruffy but have excellent barrels. Parts are a problem though, I would like a replacement handguard for mine but theyre made of unobtainium in NZ.
