| Have any of you guys gotten to the point where you just collect retro parts instead of building them into complete rifles? Right now, I have one retro rifle (early 603), a near complete late 603, an A2, and an A4 (among many other firearms). It's getting to the point where I just can't afford to build a new rifle every time I stumble across another part that can't be used on one of my current rifles. Right now, I have a few of the hard to find parts for an early 604, but it just wouldn't be financially responsible for me to try to build it up, so I'm just kind of holding on to them just because I like the idea of having them around. Have any of you run into the same problem? |
| I still buy if the price is right but pass on a lot of it mostly because of condition and price. Condition being well used and price being like new or more. Got enough NOS stuff for about two more builds less barrels and have sold off most my extra stuff. I keep a few extra Colt BCG's and charging handles and small parts but as we all know spare parts like uppers and lowers turn into new rifles and carbines. As for looking at parts, anywhere I spend much time in my home or garage there are AR parts visible and I boxed up a bunch. |

Do you mean parts laying around like this? http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii228/lusciousclay/DCP_2978.jpg http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii228/lusciousclay/DCP_2979.jpg Yeah, something like that.

Isn't it funny how if you come across one particular item, it leads to endless searching for associated items that you'll use to build a version that you may not have originally had much interest in.
For me, I enjoy the searching, getting help from others here, and trying to modify existing parts to get what I'm after. John Thomas |

It's only "collecting parts" if you have no intention of actually building them. In my mind, at least, everything I buy is a build-in-progress.
Having said that, I've warned my family that if I die suddenly, they're to call in my old friend, Morg308, to clean my office. There are way too many "builds-in-progress" in there that will require someone with retro knowledge to identify. I have this terrifying nightmare of my Lovely Young Bride dumping all "those damned old gun parts" in a cardboard box and setting them out at a yard sale (along with anything else that reminds her of me). |

My family has no idea of the values of anything I own that's firearm related. Someone would take them to the cleaners if they tried to sell my stuff.

I've taught enough of my family and friends how to build AR's (and some have since gone on to build their own rifles) so they can finish the parts I have if they wanted (they have no interest in model numbers). I also designated a go-to friend to handle selling, storing, and friend / family distribution of my guns. With that said I'm not going anywhere.

I have several projects going like that myself - now that I'm working, it seems like dentists and vetrenarians are getting all my extra money. |

Spreadsheets are OK, but print it out and put it in the gunsafe.
I have created a "book" with pictures of my firearms and what makes each model special. I also keep all my rifles in gunsocks with tags with the model number, but if they get them mixed up they will be able to identify them with the pictures. If my family wants to get rid of one or more of my rifles after I'm gone, they'll be able to differentiate the 601 from the 602. I also have a separate book with NFA items and instructions on how to dispose of them or transfer them. |
|
Damn I feel like a piker, I only have 2 small boxes of parts for my current project. My son has already said he's cleaning out all 3 safes when I croak, I told him to "F*** OFF, Your Momma knows who get's what and you dont get anymore than what I say you get!"
He's mad at me because he didnt like my answer, well spend more time with me and learn all I can teach you and I may change my mind. Why would I leave anyone "toy's" they cant work on or appreciate? With that said, I dont think the wife will have a problem finding new homes for the AR's, FAL's or AK's, the boy can have the 12 ga. and 22's.... Seeing all those "builds in progress" makes me want more parts to build a bunch more KISS carbines... |

I don't have the time to document all of them, and to the uninitiated–– parts is parts! |

If I had a wife or girlfirend your right I would have one hell of a problem if I had to explain why I had to the gun show and bring home parts off of the "junk parts tables" I'm working at building as many toys as I can before I find the next girl friend. Anyone have a daughter in her late 20's to eary 30's. I might have a nice retro for a dowry.
