Post em!
I have no idea why but I have the sudden urge to bash together a transitional type bolt group to go with my 603 project...Probably because they're oddities and interesting. I've only ever seen one or two, so if anybody wants to share photos you've got of transitional bolt groups in any configuration (FA, non FA, chrome, non chrome, etc) for ARs, M-16s, and SP-1s, I'd love to see them. |

Didja notice the one in this early SP1? Parked carrier and key, but chrome bolt (narrow band), machined firing pin retaining pin, and I think a flat-head firing pin. |
| Funny you made this thread, because I just added a 601 (not exactly correct, I know) chrome bolt (MP marked) to my park'd Colt carrier (C marked) for my XM16E1. I originally wanted an all chrome carrier, but those are hard to come across with forward assist cuts. Now I need to find a chrome extractor, and I'll be all set. |

Rock River Arms (Link direct to relevant page), also available through PK Firearms (At the very bottom of this page) are currently selling full-chrome bolt groups for $130. I own two of them, they're entirely chrome plated, key screws, firing pin retaining pin (Modern style, but chrome), extractor retaining pin, etc. If you only want a chrome extractor, those are available through DPMS as an individual part. When I called a few days ago about chrome carriers they mentioned something about free shipping for on-line orders. |

Thanks for the info, but I want an original Colt carrier, which is why I just kept the park'd one. |

I've also seen quite a few of them with what looks like park OVER the chrome with a really bright finish. Now I hate to say it but that's impossible! Chrome plating provides very good corrosion inhibition, which means that you cannot apply parkerizing to the metal since parkerizing is a form of controlled corrosion. However, I imagine that if the carriers were to be shot peened or otherwise machined in a way that resulted in a rough texture, chrome plating would have a different look than if applied over a smooth carrier, and might possibly look more like a parked carrier. |
