Let's say I wanted to build a dedicated 22LR retro carbine upper. I have a Colt non-FA upper. I like the CMMG dedicated 22LR barrel and bolt kit idea but it's an M4 profile. How much to you think I'd have to pay to have a barrel turned to lightweight carbine profile? And if I did that, are retro FSB available without paying an arm and a leg?
Thanks, ChillyB |
| Contouring at Adco runs $95. You might consider the lightweight barrel here instead. |

Spikes makes a lightweight .22 barrel.
Buy the complete upper, Sell off the new flat top receiver and add on your Colt. It will look 14.5 but be 16in because it goes back into the upper some. You won't have to bother having it contoured. http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=72_73&products_id=382 I had this idea to do it as a 653/654 clone. I may one day still do this. |

I don't know nuthin bout .22 setups, but this may help your budget if it can be used,,selling by member Morg308.Highly recommended member.

$385 total for Model 1 bolt assembly and barrel. Much less for CMMG but it's not a lightweight profile. Maybe I'll quit being so picky and allow for the CMMG M4 profile. It's not worth $100 to have the "correct" profile. put the M4 profiled barrel on a C7 upper and call it a 723 .....that's what I did http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0603/Ekie12091941/Govt%20Carbines/variation%20guide/upperassy11.jpg Very nice |
| I wanted a 20 inch 22LR barrel and was planning on spending a lot to buy one from Ballistic Advantage. I ended up finding a retro 22LR upper with mags on the EE and bought it instead. I'm happy with it, it was a good deal, for the price I paid it was like getting all the 22LR parts with the nicest round forge 604 upper I own thrown in for free. If I didn't get a good deal on what I have I would have been happier with the more expensive 22 inch barrel. My barrel is a Model 1 Sales barrel, it has the A2 FSB so my old bipod won't grip the barrel between the FSB legs. What's my point? Spend more on getting exactly what you want, you will end up happier. |

As was mentioned above, the M1S lightweight profile barrel is the easiest and least expensive route for
a dedicated 22lr retro. If it wasn't for the M1S credit card fiasco, I'd do it again. I bought their barrel, Spike's dedicated 22lr bolt assembly and some CMMG straight twenties. I put everything into a 604 upper and NoDak lower, dyed the mags, put on the correct stock and forearm... Now I have a perfect match for my 653 clone... A 654 in 22lr. I've meant to take pictures ofthe two together, but I've been working so much. I guess if I ever get pressured into it by enough people, I'll take the time to take pictures and post them. With the ejection port door closed, and if you look past the magazine assembly screws, you'd be hard pressed calling it out for being a 22lr. |

Before I bought my S&W M&P15-22 most of the use of this rifle has been .22LR. 1.12 rifling twist. A few 5.56mm rounds clean the gas system nicely. M16A1 upper (C MP CHROME BORE) with an XM16E1 flash suppressor. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/892154/EIVLW-852581027-xm16E1_1.jpg –– Chuck That's the same route I went basically 3 years ago. The upper was $200 on the EE
I use a Ciener conversion kit and Federal bulk pac ammo. This is a target from 50 yards
