Question: The OP's rifle is equipped with an Edgewater buffer, so it should have a 601 buffer tube, right? If this is so, why is there no roll pin intersecting the buffer tube? Not trying to stir up trouble, Francis, just wondering. By the time 1968 rolled in, Colt was into making 604's and M16A1's. So who knows? We could speculate many reasons. Since it is a civilian rifle, could be that it was built with whatever parts were on hand. Maybe by 1968 Colt was in some kind of parts transition. Thanks for all of the kind comments on the rifle. This is my 4th AR to date. After using 604's in the Air Force for 21 years, I was not wanting to get in the AR field. But after a fluke trade where I aquired a "broken" Bushmaster and happened on a Colt Gov't Carbine deal, I figured it was time to look at the AR again. I did build a replica of the 604 I was issued in 1985. It was serial number 271139. Made in 1965. Maybe I can post pics of the 604 build tomorrow. |
