| There was a thread quite awhile back where someone was asking how a dedicated .22 upper was built - but that wasn't the title of it. I'm interested in that myself - IIRC, the front of the ar conversion unit is separated from the rest (the 'barrel' right?) and permanently mounted in the chamber? I would really like to know more about the process, if someone can point me to that info, or similiar threads, I'd appreciate it. Also wouldn't mind hearing pros and cons of this method. Why do it in the first place - accuracy? convienience? |

If it was me I'd just by a Spikes or CMMG conversion kit. My buddy has a Spikes kit. I ran in my 604 last week. Ran like a top! Here's the link to the rimfire section...... http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=15 |

I think a better way to do it is remove the chamber adapter, and cut the ears on the bolt carrier rail ( this is for a Ciener kit ). Then machine the back of the barrel with the same pattern as the chamber adapter, chamber and slide the prongs of the slide rail into the back of the barrel. Done this way it will shoot as good as the barrel allows. Mine is really great except that I built it when I was playing at target shooting and it has a 20" barrel and free float tube, not very retro :-(
I have the instructions around somewhere and I can copy them to anybody interested in doing it. Like I said; this works great but it iis a machining project, not a drop in. |
