Ive always loved the XM177, now its time to put one together, First off I cant decide if I want to do the XM177E1 or E2.

Stock:
- im confused as to stick with the plastic carbine stock or the metal.
-buffer tube stock positions? how many?
-and with that question why are all of them commercial ones?

Barrel work:
-Everyone seems to be sending it to 45Bravo and doing the Bushmaster lightweight barrel?
-are there any other options?
-What are the overall completed lengths of the E1/E2 (I live in CA, so I want to make sure I dont break any laws)
-45Bravo makes the flashhider, who was the other guy, and how do they compare

Upper receiver:
-I have an LM marked A1 style receiver, not sure of the 600 series of it? but it has a tear drop FA, am I good to go on this?

besides that internal wise etc Im good to go.

AND why cant we search anything past 30 days? I hate to be "that guy" and make another XM thread but I was having troubles locating stuff.

any advice is appreciated.

Aluminum

2 position

Original would be milspec.
You'll have to hunt for one.

Check with Heatnbeat

-What are the overall completed lengths of the E1/E2 (I live in CA, so I want to make sure I dont break any laws)

XM177 and XM177E1=14.5"   XM177E2=16"

-45Bravo makes the flashhider, who was the other guy, and how do they compare

Check with Brick.

Upper receiver:

Not for an XM177(610)  but it would be correct for an XM177E1(609) or XM177E2(629)

besides that internal wise etc Im good to go.

Because you're not a member.
A membership will get you archive access.

any advice is appreciated.

Beware of spare parts. <-Best advice I can give!

My XM177E1 had a metal, rubber covered telestock.  Two positions:  In and Out.  This stock could be shattered if struck hard on something and we were glad to see the plastic stocks on the M4s years later.

XM177 and XM177E1 had 10" barrel with 4" modifier.  The E2 had an 11-1/2" barrel with the same modifier.  We pulled these and test fired them and could barely wait to get the modifiers back on.  Blast and flame were awesome!  Never bothered to measure the barrel length, it was moot as these were submachine guns (and so marked on the lower receiver).

No bayonet lug on either.

No "mag fence" on the E1.  Pretty sure the E2 was based on the M16A1 lower and would have had one.

The XM177E2s had 11.5" barrels and moderators. If you permanently attach a realistic fake moderator onto an 11.5" barrel it still won't be 16" overall. Most people have their barrels cut to about 12.5" and permanently install the fake moderator or have 45BRAVO permanently install a fake moderator over a modified 15" barrel. The stocks are very hard to find, even reproductions. Some guys just coat plastic stocks that have the same profile as the metal ones. Not sure about the laws in California, but you will probably have to have a muzzle brake, pin the stock in one position, and may not be able to use detacheable magazines.

Thanks Dustin,

as far as the metal stock goes, I did locate a metal one with a commercial 3 position tube? no brand on either though.

send a 16" lightweight barrel to 45Bravo and he'll work his magic on it, and you'll receive a barrel that will look like one of these

Genuine Colt M4 barrels are collector items themselves, don't cobble one into a retro XM177 length barrel.  Since "retro" really only mimics the appearances any 10" threaded barrel will usually suffice and these can be cut down from ordinary 16" barrels by lots of folks.

so lets say if i DIDNT use a metal stock and went with a plastic for weight purposes? would this be a sin? I want my XM as a real lightweight carbine/ Bug out rifle?

yes they are ....that pic is from 45Bravo's EE thread

....if I had a Colt 14.5" barrel , I would get one of CNC Warriors extended A1 FH's and make a 653 or 654, 'cause I can't have a sbr here

The tube is likely mil-spec while the stock is likely commercial - is it loose on the tube? (Ask me how I know )
FWIW< I really like the 3-pos stock. The E1 would have had an anodized Alu stock while the E2 had a a coated Alu stock. The fiberlite is technically just post war, and likely was issued in FAR greater quantities. Jillions of commercial copies exist, and the difference in price is roughly 2 - 2.5X between the real thing and commercial. I bought a commercial stock kti complete from a member here who sells them on the EE and was very happy with it - until I looked into things further and the OCD part of RBRD kicked in. Then I got an EA stock, then sold it because I wanted an E1... Now I have a 'parked' (anodized, but for some reason I always think parkerizing) version of the stock. Correct would be 2-pos but who cares? Make it work for yourself. If it fits a little better because it has an extra position or tow, you'll be happier in the long run than being able to say 'it has the original 2-pos tube'. I have a 2-pos tube, and will likely sell it at some point rather than use it.

There was an outfit in Texas called BH Service that had 10.5" barrels with a 5.5" flash suppressor silver soldered on back around 1980-1981.
The barrel came with gas tube and pin, front sight and a cheap set of handguards without heat shields.
I bought one and had a nice little rifle built.
The flash suppressor was nothing but a resonator as that thing was LOUD. Every once in a while you would get hit in the face by burning powder.
The muzzle flash was something ,too.
The only 5.56mm firearm that was worse in the blast/flash department was a 10" Contender that my dad owned.
