for $250, does this sound good?
used M16 "pencil" barrel marked CMP Chrome Bore. Barrel OD is 0.625 and has been reparkerized to mil-spec black manganese. Bore is excellent but shows some wear near the throat. I will include the front sight post and front swivel.

What are my other options for a barrel that will work for a 602, 603, or 604 project?

EDIT:
or is this a better choice?

It is a genuine Colt A1 barrel. It depends on if you want an original  barrel, or a new manufacture barrel.

For My A1 build, I wanted the genuine thing. I am using as many original Colt parts as possible. The new barrel is likely a good choice if you are not so concerned about it being an original  A1 part.

I am told by DPMS that the the profile on their lite barrel is .750.

kinda pricey for a refinished barrel with a worn throat

just keep an eye peeled on GunBroker

you might be better off looking for a barreled receiver, and selling off the bits you don't need

I've been thinking all along that $200 was pushing it for one, but $250? I'd have to pass on that one.

What's a good choice for a new barrel (which is what I would prefer).  I also have no clue as to what barrel profile/diameter is appropriate for this build.  Is there any difference in a a1 to a2 front sight base other than markings?

An A1 FSB has a round sight post, while an A2 FSB has a square sight post. The barrel I'm using for my XM16E1 clone is a C MP chrome bore with a 3 prong flash suppressor. Not accurate, but I'm gonna call it a clone of a re barrelled XM16E1.

can the round a1 post be put in a a2 FSB?  Are there significant differences between the A1 and A2 FSB that will cause someone to say, "Thats the wrong FSB." just by glancing at the rifle?
And finally, where should I source a barrel?  I would like a new barrel for this rifle, but one that looks as close to the original as possible (don't care about markings), and will take the triangle handuards.

A round sight post can be put into an A2 FSB. An A1 sight base has a smaller diameter than an A2 sight base, but other than that, there are no physical differences besides the sight post that I can see. Some of the early sight bases (used on 601's, 602's, and early XM16E1's) were cast instead of forged, but unless you're building a clone of one of those models, you don't have to worry about that.

cool, now that just leaves the barrel.  is that DPMS i linked in the OP appropriate?

It'll work and fit the triangle handguards, but it won't be 1/12 twist like the original.

ETA: Do you have to have new barrel? If not, you can always find an original Colt barrel if you keep looking as crackedcornish stated. Hell, the seller may even come to you. Mine sure did

A barrel for a 602, 603, or 604 model project will be A1 profile with a .625" FSB. This means the exterior barrel diameter at the FSB mount area is .625". Most "modern" 20" barrels with measure .750" at the FSB.
Because there is currently no barrel manufacturer offering a 20" A1 profile barrel, .625" at the FSB, one is limited to using older inventory, either Colt made, for example, or, for example, commercial barrels offered within the last five years by SARCO.
An alternative is to buy a 20" Government profile barrel, have it turned down to A1 specs, and install a .625" FSB.

ouch, this sounds no bueno!  Sounds like I will have to save the dollars for an old Colt upper and salvage the barrel and sell the rest.
