What examples are there of field-made M16 parts? Particulary from the Vietnam era?
Others come to mind, like the Filipino franken mags. That pathetic ejection port cover comes to mind, probably made out of a budweiser can. Which ones might actually be fun to install and use? One useful example is the alumninum pistol grips that came back on some AR-10's that served in Africa. A photo is linked. These were not one-off's. I have seen several and they all were made with exactly the same cross hatch pattern. One lives in my tool box and would be used if any aluminum furniture turned up. http://www.xs4all.nl/~harmar68/schieten/ar10/AR10%20furnitue%20alu.jpg |
| Slings. There seem to be an endless parade of photos showcasing every soldiers' abiliity to fab them out of anything. (rope, gp straps, medical tubing, etc) Doesn't really count as a fabbed part, but the modification of handguards to store a cleaning rod. That's all I can think of this late at night. I'm sure there are other things. Mostly US soldiers seem to have modified thier rifles appearance with extra accessories or camouflaging techniques as opposed to replacing components with field expedient items. We all love our "bling." |
| I knew a guy that destroyed his handguards during the jump into Panama in '89. He landed on his rifle and the handguards cracked bad. The bolt release also broke off. This with the rifle in a M1950. Needless to say he hit hard. He repaired / made a set of handguards with 100MPH tape and 550 cord. Sorry, that is all I got. |

Pretty sure I've seen pics of some wild looking muzzle attachments being used on M16s in vietnam, looked almost like cones attached with hose clamps. Dont have any pictures though. I know this isn't an M16 but its still a pretty good example of field expedient gunsmithing.

You'd think with the abundance of AK's, they could find an appropriate stock somewhere! Might be ergonomically suitable for this fighting style:
