What examples are there of field-made M16 parts?  Particulary from the Vietnam era?

Others come to mind, like the Filipino franken mags.  That pathetic ejection port cover comes to mind, probably made out of a budweiser can.

Which ones might actually be fun to install and use?

One useful example is the alumninum pistol grips that came back on some AR-10's that served in Africa.  A photo is linked.  These were not one-off's.   I have seen several and they all were made with exactly the same cross hatch pattern.  One lives in my tool box and would be used if any aluminum furniture turned up.

The early forward grips on Car 15s in nam. They cut a rear grip and screwed it forward.

I don't have any pics, but my buddy lost the charging handle on his benelli shotgun while on a patrol. He ended up fashioning a new one out of the eyelet from his rifle cleaning kit. Took about 20 min with a multi tool.

Slings.  There seem to be an endless parade of photos showcasing every soldiers' abiliity to fab them out of anything. (rope, gp straps, medical tubing, etc)  Doesn't really count as a fabbed part, but the modification of handguards to store a cleaning rod.  That's all I can think of this late at night.  I'm sure there are other things.  Mostly US soldiers seem to have modified thier rifles appearance with extra accessories or camouflaging techniques as opposed to replacing components with field expedient items.  We all love our "bling."

There was a thread a while back about AK mags modded to fit M16s in Nam.  As I recall, evidence was inconclusive, but several pics seemed to illustrate it.

Not M16, but a popular field expedient solution to the M60 feed problem was to wedge a C-rat can under the feed ramp to lift the belt up so it wouldn't jam...

Not M16-related, but SOG Recon and Hatchet Force guys used to take RPDs and M60s and chop the barrels in front of the gas tubes for greater mobility.

There's an Ian Skennerton photo on page 235 of The Black Rifle that shows an XM177E2, "modified by members of the Royal Australian Regiment", with wooden handguards.

Was this very common?  Did they find the plastic handguards so inadequate?

Hey, at least it has a place for the spring.
Heck a little duck tape will keep that thing closed.

I knew a guy that destroyed his handguards during the jump into Panama in '89.  He landed on his rifle and the handguards cracked bad.  The bolt release also broke off.  This with the rifle in a M1950.  Needless to say he hit hard.  He repaired / made a set of handguards with 100MPH tape and 550 cord.  Sorry, that is all I got.

worked more reliably than having to snake the ammo through the flex chute to get it loaded on the '60D.

I have a home brew G3 stock that I can post pics of later.

It came in with a huge batch of G3 stuff that had El Salvadorian newspaper stuffed under the slimline handguards. (extra insulation I suppose)

Pretty sure I've seen pics of some wild looking muzzle attachments being used on M16s in vietnam, looked almost like cones attached with hose clamps.  Dont have any pictures though.  I know this isn't an M16 but its still a pretty good example of field expedient gunsmithing.

HAHAHA That is pretty cool.  You'd think with the abundance of AK's, they could find an appropriate stock somewhere!

Might be ergonomically suitable for this fighting style:

Now I need to find an AK parts kit and a busted shovel!  That looks awesome.  Can you imagine the rangemasters' face when he sees that??!!!
