Is there a difference between parkerizing and phosphate coating? What are the common park like finishes? What did colt use on say a 601 barrel?
Thanks in advance. |
| both are the same other than using manganese dioxide, zinc.MD is the black colored and zinc is the gray.phosphoric acid is the base, distilled water and the zinc or MD.the coatings are used as a base for painting or by themselves as a protective coating/rust inhibitor.works for metals or aluminum etc.I make my own with prep and etch from home depot,MD which can come from D cell batteries(black powder inside and steel wool/iron oxide) to age it. |
| I use this stuff. I do barrels in a stainless fish poacher I got on eBay, lay it across 2 burners on the stove. Don't forget to plug barrels if they aren't chrome lined. After they're done, I rinse them in hot water to fix, then brush with Cosmoline while still warm. |

According to Gunplumber at Arizona Response Systems (Mark Graham), there is no need to plug barrels unless you plan to leave the barrel in the solution for days on end. Any finish depositied on the bore surface will bo gone after only a few rounds fired. His website has a great page explaining phosphate finishes including how and why some seem green in color. http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/notes/notesfinish/metal/pagemetal.shtml (someone help me make this a hot link please!) |
