The Rule states    "1) Posting “price requesting” or "look what I found" threads where items are being exchanged or sold are not allowed."

I remember a year or so back, this was discussed in detail. And though my memory is bad sometimes, I remember higher ups gave the ok for modest "Personal" price requests, as long as it was for personal knowledge. And that the rule only applied to people or vendors who were trying to "Sell" the item. I know it is hard sometimes to tell the difference. And there have been occasions in other threads where the item makes it's way to gunbroker or our E&E fairly quickly. But it shouldn't be up to the members to decide what is or isn't an acceptable price request. So the question is, Am I delusional?  Or did I grossly misunderstand what was OK'd as far as price requesting goes? I mean if you read the rule it states "Where items are being exchanged or sold"!! Even though this has been discussed a few times before. Can we get an opinion/clarification by staff on this, then get it stickied for future reference! My mother raised me with a good set of manners, and it just doesn't seem right for our retro members to say basically "F off" your breaking a rule, every time someone asks how much something is worth.

I will vote the other way,

If I remember that thread correctly, the Mod/Site Staff at the time did allow for “limited” postings of items on auctions. What constitutes the definition of limited is beyond me. Since we are breaking the tenants of the Code of Conduct anyway, you may as well trash the whole thing.

Personally, I consider the endless links to auctions and EE adds as spamming the forum. At times these posts are so numerous that finding threads about an interesting variation, component or accessory is nearly impossible. Sharing information based on research, experience or even the best educated guess of the members is the reason this forum was created, remember?

Are these threads really that helpful to you? Are we as a group so incompetent that we cannot search GunBroker, Sturm or the EE on our own to find parts or to ascertain prices? I truly hope not. Though it is obvious some out there consider such post a public service and therefore useful.

To that end, I suggest we get the Mods/Site Staff to tack a dedicated thread labeled “Retro Parts for sale/links to current retro auctions” or some such. That would consolidate these useful threads into one easy to locate place. As they are so numerous, it would most likely stay at the top of the forum.

My .02 and sorry for the rant,

The rule was intended for the guy that found 20 chrome 601 bolt carriers somewhere and then posts "What are these worth?"
He then proceeds to use this "score of parts for his collection" as a veiled attempt to sell them to the guys in this forum.
They should be listed in the EE, and in this example, the seller knows EXACTLY what they are worth.

I do agree the links to Gunbroker are getting to be too frequent. I never minded it before, but it only used to happen about once a month or so, and it was for something reeeeealy rare.

Remember the $67 604 uppers from a couple years ago?

I am VERY VERY GUILTY of posting heads up threads, and admit it freely.I would love to see a sticky devoted to heads up for adds and auctions as described above.Lately I have been trying to limit posting them here, and posting them to the RBR "heads up" forum instead, but still do post some here to get maximum exposure on certain items I think the retro crew might like.
So,+1 from me for a dedicated "heads up" thread
ETA,regarding the original post requesting a "pricing" or "what it's worth" sticky,it could work but folks have to remember that any appraisal would be based on observations of recent closed auctions or items sold from an add and would vary greatly.A recent thread talked about the cost to build a 601 and there were very very different prices given on certain parts ie: unmodded 601 buffer tube, and edgewater buffers. So this kind of sticky would be marginally helpful at best. Just my 2 pennies.

I'm starting to really hate the heads up threads.  I believe they detract from the discussion, are at best a nusiance, and they don't add value except to bump up the prices of the items so noted.  Anyone who is looking for something is bound to be searching the EE and auctions themselves abyway.  Also, this is a technical forum, and should be focused on technical discussions.

DocMike got permission to develop a tacked  bluebook pricing type of thread about a year and a half ago, but personal issues pervented him from following through.  Maybe M1 or someone with sufficient interest may be able to complete the task.

Now this is a swell idea.

As far as a "Heads up" thread,I'm new to the Retro forum, so I'll go along with what you guys decide.
I know that the majority of the guys here are building something or looking for a missing part to their build.  Some people don't like  links  to Gunbroker,  but  In the few weeks I've been in Retro, There's only been a few. GB is the reason your retro parts cost more, but it is also the reason your SP1's are now worth 1 to2 thousand dollars instead of $500.
I know that if I were  looking , for example(I'm not looking) , a  VP 12 barrel, I would very much appreciate the fact that one of our fellow members  posted a link to it.
The person  on GB might have posted this barrel as an" old AR barrel"",  but someone here saw that it was in reality an old 601 barrel. I had this happen to me on an old 1911 once.
my numerous search words would have never brought this rare barrel to my attention.
I know that I want to post a link to GB to verify originality. I don't want to pay $500 for a barrel that is only worth $150.. If a member wants to respond, that's great .

Pricing is indeed time sensitive and can prove to be a slippery slope. My suggestion on consolidating the Auction/EE threads was mainly to clean up the forum and focus on technical discussions.

Aside from actually buying said items, doing so would allow interested members to review current auctions in order to get an idea of what certain components are currently selling for. I.E, it should provide Joe Member with some basic knowledge as too; if he is getting a screaming deal, is paying a reasonable price or, he is about to get hosed.

As this is an ever changing market, trying to assign firm price ranges or a buyer’s guide would be an exercise in futility. Recent auctions have proven that if there is someone out there with more money than sense or, a bad case of the “gotta have its” all bets are off. One sale at a ridiculous price sets a precedent for the next scalper errr, entrepreneur to set their price at.

Yes!  I ordered 2, then decided to get more, so I ordered 10 more, but they were up to $85 by then.  However, one of them turned out to be an unissued 601 upper!

I wish the heads up threads would go away. I love this place and everyday I come to hopefully learn something. But most of the 1st page is "look at this"  and sometimes its not even gun related. ITS AS bad as GD in its own way   The bad part is most of us already sen the adds on gunrker anyway or are at least smart enough to search  by our lonesome ( I hope)

I don't see where giving someone a ballpark value on something is so bad.
But I vote to kill the "heads up" crap.

I like the idea of allowing only one thread dedicated to heads-up posts.
