If I want to do a Dissipator style setup with triangulars, am I going to want mid-length or carbine-length gas system under there?  I have seen the carbine-length and it required removing a bit of material from the handguards, and have heard off-hand mentions that this might be different with the right mid-length setup, but that seems counterintuitive to me.  Any help is appreciated.

I think you are right.  I've never done one, but took a look at what you are talking about.

Although the handguards get slightly thinner as they get farther from the receiver the heat shield has a cut out on the bottom starting at about 7".  It appears the heat shield at 7" or carbine length may interfere with the GB, but at 9" it is open on the bottom.  I slide a small YHM LP gas block down the inside of a set of triangle handguards and the bottom did catch on the heat shield slightly around carbine length.  A low pro gas block should work with minor modification or no modification to the heat shield.  You might have trouble finding one in .625 though.

Receiver end is to the right.  The opening is right about carbine GB length.

Well I'll be.  Pre-cut for mid-length.  Those boys at Colt were true visionaries.

I did just such a setup (triangular handguards over a carbine-length gas system) and it did require modifying the heat shields to clear the gas block. I used a Dremel tool with a thin cutoff wheel. It was not difficult at all.

I used a Bushmaster M4 postban barrel. I cut down the FSB and fitted the gas block to the handguards. I did not want to have custom handguards for the 605

The 605 is really the prettiest AR variant ever made in my opinion, if only someone made a flattop upper with a brass deflector but with the "hump" from a milled down FA.  Then it could be properly bastardizard modernized

I believe ASA made some 9mm uppers in that configuration

Close but no cigar from what I can tell at least of their current products, the bump has been milled down and a custom 9mm deflector mounted over it.

I love the looks of the 605.

I ran a fake gas tube from the front sight base to the gas block. Looks better when you can see the gas tube. Also the end cap does not spin.

The mid-length with the low profile gas block doesn't require any mods to the heat shield.

Maybe it doesn't have the 605-ish milled-off look, but Les Baer manufactures a flattop upper w/ deflector and w/o forward assist.
