All right, here's the deal. I'm nearing completion of a 601 clone. One of the few pieces I need is an original windage wheel for the rear sight. I recently bought a spare 601 upper just for the wheel, but now I realize that I'm not even certain how to verify whether the wheel is original.
I've spoken to Jerrel S. ("Heatnbeat") about how to identify one of his repros, and I've started collecting photos of wheels that are confirmed originals. When I've gathered enough info to form a semi-intelligent post, I'd like to compile a validation guide. And that brings me to this: if you have a good clear photo of an original 601 sight wheel, please post it here. If you have a good clear photo of a reproduction 601 sight wheel, please post it here. Naturally, please make sure to clearly label your post as "original" or "repro" (or "unsure" if you're...well, unsure). Also, any info you have about how to identify originals will be appreciated. Thanks! |

Here is an original from Retro Black Rifle: http://www.pullig.com/retroblackrifle/sitebuilder/images/601-RearSight-1-96x102.jpg I'll try to get a picture of my Heatnbeat reproduction. I'm hoping to have an original 601 EPC to exchange with the current Heatnbeat reproduction on my 601 clone tomorrow or Monday. While I have it out I'll take pictures of the reproduction site wheel. if you don't need the POS repoduction I could find a home for it....just say'n |

Well I guaran dam tee that it took longer to make than an original Colt! And if you have any orphans that need a home, you can just send them home to daddy ! Oh, and for the record: the stamps on all mine have been done in a fixture so they're all alike, there are no variants. |
Hey wait! He's my best friend, so he should offer me his cast-offs first since I got him hooked on this shit right? Oh wait...I don't want a 601. I tell myself that every night before bed: "You do not want 601 parts... you do not want 601 parts..." Seriously though, I actually have been able to resist that particular urge, even though I love 601s. not sure how, but just seeing pics of them and occasionally handling one is enough for me. Besides which, after handling OlGunner's original Portugese AR10, the 601 almost seems like a weak sister . (A very hot weak sister though I keep telling him he needs to go insult the local .30 club who are Garand/M1A fanatics, with his old AR10 just on principle...but he'll tell you I was always a bit of a troublemaker. Of course, he's wrong. I was always the well-behaved, respectful type before I ran into a certain juvenile delinquent who led me into temptation...loose women, drinking, fornication without the benefit of marraige, exceeding assorted speed limits and other minor...oh wait. This is a public forum huh? Well, what I meant to say was that in our youth OlGunner really made me think about breaking the law, but of course neither of us ever did anything that could be remotely considered wrong. I did occasionally seriously consider certain errant behavior however, and it's all his fault. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

| Just my 2 added cents Gunner,,to me looking at uxb's side by side pic, then going back to the others it looks like the tip of the wheel where the screw comes thru on the originals tapers in like a cone whereas the "Jerrelled" one looks rounded..Just my observation. This make sense? |
|
That one next to uxb's is probably the first ( succesful one) I did, and yes, it's probably a little more rounded. The top on an original is not tapered, it's a radius, but a larger radius than the diameter of the hub. The patina on uxb's also plays tricks on the eye. One other difference is the "R" is a slightly different size; but it would be hard to tell unless you had the 2 side by side.
BTW I'd like to mention that uxb was very generous in lending me his original to copy. Another great member of the Retro brotherhood! |

Appreciate that, David, but would really love some good close-up detail if you ever get the chance! |
