Not my auction
Anybody have an idea what they would have been used on?

I've never see any like that before, of course there's a lot that I've never seen when it comes to "odd" AR15 parts.

All three appear to have had something attached where the rectangle* is on other port doors.

*Is there a name for that? The ad calls them "plates."

I believe these have come up in the past...if I remember correctly, someone said they were aftermarket pieces

I think what you are seeing is where the bracket is spot welded on from the other side

I would have to go with crackedcornish and say they are aftermarket pieces. I bet they get bent easy with on bumper block on them.

What you see is in fact a spot from the welded latch.

I've seen pictures of an early Colt 703 with those port covers.
Unfortunately I couldn't get permission to put them on Retro Black Rifle without paying, darn copyright.
Note:The 703 picture on Retro Black Rifle is a later one with small rectangular reinforcement plates.

I've never seen them on anything else except reproductions.
IMHO, I think they look great on NDS-32 uppers.
Here are a few more pictures:

They don't bend any easier than those with reinforcement plates.

wasn't there someone from here selling these on GB not too long ago?

Yes, and I have a few more I'll sell once I've recovered and can drive myself to the post office to mail them.

And I'd take em too. I got a couple from another guy a while back, Starkravingmags I think. Really cool looking units. I'm probably going to add a square to one for my 601. The other is on my NDS-32 right now. We had an earlier discussion on these and it was determined that they are aftermarket.

+1 for above^^^^ We can backtrack to when I had posted Tex's auction(at the time I did'nt know it was him) and someone replied with a persons name who made these up as he could not find A1 port doors at the time.I'll see if I can find that name.

They are commerically made (affermarket parts) made by Jerry Drasen in the early 1980's when he couldn't get port doors from any source.

He also made up the steel buffer tubes you see from time to time that are mislabelled as "USMC match" tubes or some such.

Jerry was a creative guy and if something wasn't available (not liek today where AR parts are readily avaialble), he simply made it.

This info is directly from him, or rather another well known board member here who knows him personally.
