[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 601 Slings

I have read as much here as I can find, but I still do not understand exactly what makes a canvas M1 Garand looking sling become a 601 sling. Is it that simple or am I missing something? Can anyone tell me the characteristics that define the early canvas slings for the 601 or 602, etc.?
