After a long searh for the proper parts I finally finished my GAU-5/A build.
Many Thanks to Ordnance, 45Bravo and many others that were nice enough to sell the vintage parts. Specs, Colt M16A2 NFA lower (yes A2 but it is an MG) Vintage anodized Colt aluminum 1 and NN marked stock 2 postion buffer tube mottled A1 grip 604 upper all chrome slickside BCG, squared key, wide band bolt 10" 1 in 7 lightweight barrel (started as a C MP CB marked 11.5) NOS shiny handguards Late model Colt NFA moderator '66 dated 20 round mag (yes I opened a 4 pack) The entire carbine is Colt, save the KNS pins, right down to the roll pin on the front sling swivel. Accuracy is better than expected for a 10" carbine and much quieter with the moderator than an 11.5" barrel, runs around 1000rpm auto.

It took me 2 1/2 years to get all the parts together, takes a while when you look for all NOS parts (or as close as you can get). BTW - I do have a '69 dated M1 nylon sling for it as well. It is fun to shoot, who needs a burst cam, 2 round bursts are easy with full auto! |

I found it interesting that the 10" barrel with moderator was quieter than an 11.5" - is that a real moderator or just your typical moderator clone? (Not that it matters, but I'd like to know for my own edification - I may have to SBR a second lower...) ETA: DOH! I really need to learn how to read. 
ETA2: What'd the real moderator run you? (besides the tax stamp) Hope you don't mind me asking. |

Full auto...........Real moderator...........SBR............I guess we can overlook the A2 lower.
I only say that because here in the Republik of Illinois we can't have ANY of those features.......except for the A2 lower and then that can only be semi.

That's just the jealousy talking though, nice carbine! It is actually closer to an XM177 clone. The only things wrong then would be the A2 lower, slip ring, and FSB. Dustin |

I did not like the KNS pins at first but I hardly notice them now, at any rate, I like to fire full auto more than semi and as the lower was new when I bought it they may prove to be a good choice in the long run. Slip rings, I do not like them at all, much easier to remove HGs with a Delta ring, and there are pictures documenting GAU-5/As with Delta rings. We had 10 carbines in our shop when I was USAF/EOD and they were all designated GAU-5s, wish I had paid more attention and taken pictures, too busy chasing skirts back then. I do recall some of them had 14.5" M4 profile barrels but that is about all..... Re-profile an NFA transfereable Colt lower, that is absurd! that would be crazy! Many thanks again to all! |

I bought it as a rifle, originally to build an M4A1 and then got the terminal retro disease and that is were I ended up.
I have a vinyl acetate stock and a 733 upper for it already, I like the GAU upper the most. The moderator I bought from a collector here in Texas. |
