yes!.... you read it correctly
I may have found a source for Mid-Length Triangular Handguards Great Lakes Firearms may be offering these. They list them as available in two colors and three lengths. I put in an order for a set of Mid-Length Handguards in Black on Saturday afternoon. I'm in hopes it's not some typo.....I'll keep you Mid-Length guys updated. |
if m1sniper hadn't asked about the old post involving triangular handguards and caps, I never would have found them. I was trying to google some archive stuff and found that by accident...never did find the post about the homemade front cap that I was actually looking for

I wish I could afford the $45 it would take to get a set of OD full length so I can compare them to my 601 handguards.
If someone wants to buy a set, and ship them to me I'll photograph them next to real 601 handguards and ship them back to them. Anyone doing a 601 build? It would be cool to have a close replica. |

I've received more than a couple of IM's about these. Guys I promise I will post what happens with these, be patient.
here is a copy of the order confirmation they sent me via e-mail: Great Lakes Firearms L.L.C. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Order Number: 38 Date Ordered: Saturday 03 October, 2009 Mid-Length Black Triangular Handguards Products –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– 1 x Triangle Handguards for Carbine and Full Length (XM 177) = $34.99 Color Black $0.00 Size Mid Length $0.00 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Sub-Total: $34.99 United Parcel Service (1 x 1lbs) (Ground): $10.42 Total: $45.41 as you can see it lists them as Mid-Length even though the title says carbine and full length. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about these. |

The description says," Each handguard comes with a new sight ring for the front to give it a neat clean look." What is a sight ring Thanks Crackedcornish for the link. Changing the endcap does normally require removing the FSB. |

Changing the endcap does normally require removing the FSB. The sight ring sounds like it may just be cosmetic and the end cap may not need to be replaced. I would prefer not to remove the front sight base. Looking to see if somebody knew what a sight ring was. |

A proper 607 copy uses standard 6" CAR length hand guards.
However, as a proper 607 copy is an NFA item requiring SBR registration, or a pin+weld flash hider, some may choose to build a standard 16" carbine instead. For those building a 16" carbine, a mid-length gas system and hand guards would present a better appearance as the proportions appear correct. ETA: So far as I know, NO military or government entities use mid-length gas systems on their weapons. The mid length gas system is a civilian market creation meant to address the issues with the odd appearance of an M4gery and it's too long 'probe-barrel' that seems to stick out for miles on end. The mid length systems also eliminate some issues with timing and port pressure on the shorter systems. For a retro build, or anybody else for that matter, mid-length triangular hand guards are just damn cool. |

well, it's been a couple of working days since I ordered the handguards and I haven't received any word one way or the other as to the availability of these in Mid Length.
I would think by now if they weren't available someone would have gotten in touch with me. I'm hoping that in this case ..no news is good news |

nothing yet, I'm going to make a phone call monday and see what the story is ![]() I've got a sinking feeling I know... yeah. I've got that feeling in my gut too..well maybe if the Mid-Length ones don't exist I'll get a set of the full length green ones and let TexSquirrel snap some comparison pics |

If it's a no-go with GLF, what would be the preferred end to cut on be on a set of triangle hand guards? others have cut the front end, shortened the guards then glued the front section back on to get the correct length and still be able to use both the slip ring at the rear and the triangular cap at the front |

This is the e-mail I just received from Great Lakes Firearms :
No it didn't ship yet. I'm went to las vegas for the weekend. I will ship Monday. All I have right now is the carbine. Length. Which one did you order? I replied .....Mid-Length in Black a couple minutes later I received this: I don't have them on mid length. But I will check onto that asap. I didn't charge your card yet so I will email you before I charge it's not looking too good |

it's not looking too good Nope, I figure they probably used the same online order page setup as their regular handguards which show Rifle, Mid and Carbine length. They probably missed editing out the Midlength... Dammit! ETA: If it makes you feel any better, your Moderator is still awesome. |

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr....
Why doesn't he just say the answer is "no", when we all know it is? I know, I know.... But it's not pessimism I'm showing, it's realism. Although my custom fabbed ones have held up fine, I agree I've no clue how they'd perform on a heavier recoiling rifle. I have faith in them because I did VERY thorough prep work and used as much overlap of material as I could before I joined the sections, but they haven't been proofed with rough handeling or a heavy caliber. Hopefully Edwin will be able to fab up a dedicated steel rear cap sometime. That will definately work well and be sturdy. |
