Weeell here I am again, trying to get back into the Retro side of life. So I decided to finally start on an XM177E1. Just got a few key parts for it yesterday and today. So far, here is what I have:

NDS-603B Upper w/o forge codes (GORGEOUS upper!!)
Colt grey charging handle (needs refinishing)
Bushmaster 4 pos. aluminum stock (will be sanding down and refinishing with Alumahyde, as well as filling the extra 2 positions...any suggestions how??)
A1 grip (will probably end up using my NOS one instead of a mottled one)
Colt shiny 6 hole handguards
Flat slip ring
A1 port door

Have an XM177 moderator on the way from 45Bravo, and also already have a modified M16 selector w/ divot (safe-semi-semi) and both takedown pins w/ divots. My list of things to buy are:
NDS XM16E1 lower
Teardrop forward assist assy, A1 rear sight assy, port door rod/spring/clip
Bushmaster post ban superlight barrel (will be cut down to 10")
Chrome M16 BCG

And that's about it. This'll be another registered SBR. Can't wait to get it done! I will also probably add details on an M16A1 or XM16E1 project once I get that started. Can't decide which...I'm thinking an early M16A1 w/ 3 prong flashider. That way I'll have all 3 styles of NDS lower Anyways, I'll update this thread as I have things to update it with. Enjoy!

SWEET!!!

Any chance of getting a more accurate barrel instead?

I love my superlight, but the profile/OD is smaller than OEM.
Going to make my 12.5" IDF build a little tricky...

Can't wait to see the progress on yours.

Only other thing I could see happening is a J&T lightweight. Are they any better?

The only barrel showing, anyway, will be under the FSB

Going to be an interesting build!  Where are you finding the hand guards?  I heard that everybody only had the 7 hole ones now.

This is the one thing I wouldn't do.  I bet it'll be more trouble than its worth...If you never told me it had all four positions, I would never know.

Good point.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I'll probably skip filling the holes in the tube. But I have a question..

Do you guys think I should Alumahyde the body black like a vinyl coated stock and then refinish the tube XM grey, or should I Alumahyde the body XM grey like an early non-coated stock?

Send the stock and receiver extension for anodizing in grey like the early stocks.

It'd help if I could see something like that on a rifle..

When you're having the barrel cut down, they'll have the front sight base off anyway to enlarge the port. Have them turn down the barrel between the sight base legs to .625 while they're in there.

Is the Bushy Superlight larger in dia. than .625?

Ah, crap. My bad. I've been up since 2am. Yep, it is .625.

Mine is .750 and it just bugs me all the time.  I think I'm going to use that barrel for a new Mk18 build, and cut down one of those Bubbaguns barrels for the XM.  Actually, I may just have it cut and the FH pinned with a grenade ring to make a fake E2. The cost of registering SBR's is really crimping my style.  I agree that you should have that BM stock anodized.  I don't have a pic, but the ones I've seen look great.  Here is mine with that darn thick barreland A2 lower (still don't have the bucks to SBR one of my Nodak lowers):

That looks great! And I think that's what I'll do. Thanks!!

Thanks,

Buffer tube, charging handle, upper/lower, trigger guard, and slip ring are all anodized in XM Grey.
