I have one that I want to use for a retro carbine, either a 629 or a 653.  I've read that they were sometimes used as replacement uppers and may have been originally black.

I have a few questions maybe you guys could help with:

1)  Since they were used as replacement uppers are they a "free for all"; meaning they could have been found on either model?

2)  Were they used for a specific model as well as replacement uppers?

3)  Why didn't they have proof marks?

Although I prefer the 629, I'm thinking a XM grey 653 would be more appropriate.  I want to get it off to US Anodizing and start looking for a barrel assembly while waiting.

Thanks for any input.

ETA:  I found it.  CH uppers were commonly found on 653's.  Some late SP1's had them, also.
