I recently purchased an HS AR-15.  Hard to find much on the internet about these rifles.  Anybody out there have any intel?

I recently bought a High Standard LPK and the trigger is really nice. No creep and really clean breaking. I have since bought some small parts of the same brand from Brownells.

I live about a mile from their shop, they are on par with DPMS. I'm going to by a lower from them next week. A bunch of guys I work with have them and I have never heard a complaint..

Sorry. I ain't buying it.. I just wish the first responder had simply asked the poster to take his question to a different section, instead of feeding the mistake by going into his own piece.

I don't spend half my time on this web site over here on the Retro section because I have the slightest interest in the carbon copy A2,A3,A4 or M4geries that are out there. If we can't stay on the true retro pieces, this section of the site becomes useless.

Mr Moderator:  Can we get this moved to where it ought to be?

Because the gent who sold it to me said it was a great "retro" AR and good for accessorizing.  I'm a newbie to the AR crowd and am just learning.

Maybe because some of usare thinking that this might be a decent receiver to use for a copy build.  If A1 lowers were everywhere we would be using them instead of waiting for a few to be released.  Does that mean a SP1 should not be talked about here too since it is not a military looking lower with its large head screw, etc???

We are all posers here (unless you have an NFA 1969 Hydromatic M16A1 OR OTHER VARIATION OF THAT THEME ) lol, so let us beginners play in the retro sand box like it's 5 years ago and NDS retro lowers are not born yet and besides (603'S HAD FULL FENCED LOWER so with that a beginner or novice can pretend like everyone else here...

This is the original post above. Has nothing to do with the retro forum as far as I can see. FWIW, most of the early clones you saw here had A2 lowers, because that was all that was available for a long time, and there is a lot of tolerance here for early, historically accurate A2s. I plan on building one on an A2 lower myself.

Also, although the M16A1 had a full-fence lower, it was NOT an A2 - there are differences, so the statement above that the M16A1 had an A2 lower is incorrect. Some M16A2s had A1 lowers, despite being marked A2, but not the other way around. As I haven't seen any pictures of the OP's 'retro rifle' it's kind of hard for me to judge, but personally, I'm a little tired of 'What Rail system / red dot / tactical sling should I use' kind of posts. Maybe if the OP had posted more pics, asking if it would be a good basis for a retro build, it would have been treated differently, but as far as I can see, this belongs in AR discussions. Yes, this is a very friendly forum, and VERY tolerant, but if it doesn't have some sort of retro aspect to it (Even early M4 posts are fine here IMO) then it doesn't belong here. Period.

This is the quote I am referring to. No offense, but go look at the NDS website for the differences between various lower receiver types. The A2 has reinforcements at front and rear as well as the full-fence. And yes, I'm fine with a retro rifle with an A2 lower - but so far in this thread I have yet to see one. Maybe the OP would like to post a pic of his 'retro AR'?

Neener, neener!
A2 rifles are retro too!

High Standards are very good basic rifles.
Perfect starter rifles that can always be upgraded as time, desires, and finances allow.

I haven't the slightest idea what the hell you're talking about.  What has a 1969 Hydramatic M16A1 got to do with retro; other than it's one  (unobtainable) example of a retro piece.

Having been an AR15 (SP1) owner since 1973 (I'm pretty Retro myself) and been modifying current type lowers to M16 and M16A1 profiles for three years before NodakSpud decided to bring their pieces out, I consider any M16, M16A1, XM177/177E2 or any of the preadoption pieces that some of the folks here are into as "Retro".  The A2 pictured above ain't reto. I't's still in use by the USMC, and some National Guard/Resrve units stil have them.

Maybe you're a "poser"; whatever that is. After all you are in California, and isn't that what they do out there?  Hell, my 12 year old is going out to Hollywood to costar in a feature film in  2 months. If he comes back a "poser", we'll fix that in a big hurry.

Does the HS in the above photo have an A2 profile barrel or A1 profile. What piqued my interest in them was one I saw at the gun show here early last month. To my surprise it had an 20" A1 profile barrel. Instantly I thought "new source for pencil barrels". Can't locate the barrels online yet though.

I've seen the pics etc of the A2 to A1 mods but do you happen to have a link to a tutorial or the like? I'm interested in giving it a shot maybe.

Considering the Israeli Defense Force still use M16A1 rifles with round handguards and CAR16 type carbines, the M16A1 ain't technically retro either!

When these first appeared a couple of years ago, I went by the local gun shop and looked at one.

Story was that the name was the same High Standard as the pistol maker, but the guns were supposedly made by some outfit in the Philippines.

Can't swear that's true, like I said that was the story I got.

However, quality, fit & finish looked very good, and I was surprised when I opened it up and many of the parts in the FCG area bore a "C" stamp.

Can't swear to it, but I think even the bolt carrier had a C on it.  My guess was that these were simply sourced from an OEM manufacturer or something, probably as a temporary matter until HS got their own supply lines up and running.

It would be interesting to see what markings the internal parts have (if any) these days.
