These are supposed to be off a Colt Sporter circa 1991.  What do you guys think?  The way the heat shield is attached is consistent with Colt but the holes and finish seem a little different.  There is also a mark of LSO TM inside the handguards, anyone seen that before?

What say you?

The tabs that hold the heat shields in look different than any Colt HGs I've ever seen or had. Also any Colt Hgs I've ever had did not have the molding flash, like in the bottom of your first picture. Going off that I would say they are not Colt, but still Retro enough (6 holes) to use on a build.

See this difference between the HGs in question & my Colt HGs?

they are not genuine colt... but they look more like it than other aftermarket ones do.  Most of the aftermarket 6 holes HGs I've seen have a crinkle finish and are molded totally different than the originals.  Here are some real colts you can compare yours to.  the holes are much larger on the colts and the ribs seem to be thicker as well.  I've noticed that the colt handguards are made of thicker plastic than aftermarkets.  sorry looks like someone else added pics to their post   now you got 2 pics

All of my original Colt carbine handguards [70s-90s] are 6-hole.

I just removed a colt carbine handguard from a Colt AR that I had laying out, and none are marked "LSO TM"

But that's not to say that they aren't Colt.

I'm just too lazy to open the safe to look at my early 90s 6520....

I had some like that once, and I submit that they are not Colt.

I think the most telling indicator (beyond the less beveled holes) is the flash at the edge of the grooved channel (the area where the holes are).  Look at the very end of that portion at the rear of the handguard in the first pic.  Molding flash not found on Colts.  I'll also bet that the HGs in question are softer and less "brittle" than the real deal.

the handguards in question are the same ones that came on some of the olympics arms carbines from the 80s.

Another indicator are the "ears" that stop the heatshield from sliding towards teh rear of the handguards.  They are thick on the non-Colt ones pictured and thin on the Colts.

The non-Colts like the ones I while shiny enough had almost a greasy very dark gray appearance, while the colts have a shine more like Bakelite.

Not Colt.
LSO = Lonestar Ordnance (now defunct) out of Texas. I have a pair of those around here somewhere...
Bought them in about '92 or '93.

awesome thanks for the info.  the holes did seem a little small to be colt.  it will match my lone star ordnance stowaway grip.  aaarghhh....what's that going to turn into?  an aftermarket retro build?

lonestar ordnance as a company is defunct but the owner is still around.  i've seen him at the dallas gun shows, nice guy with some retro parts.  they made some of the first aftermarket a2 handguards (ribs spaced out really far) and he told me one of his handguards can be seen in predator.

oh well not colt but for $10, didn't really go wrong.  plus it's cool to have an almost matching set of lonestar ordnance handguards.

So THATS who made those a2 handguards with the wide ribs.. I've always wondered this myself.  I saw a set of those on an SP1 at a gun show fairly recently and was wondering what they were all about, now i know

here they are on Billy's SP1 in the movie Predator

anyone chime in on what else lonestar ordnance made?  the stowaway grip was about 20 years ahead of it's time.
