(I'm no expert, others may have better answers than me) SGW is Schuetzen Gun Works which is now known as Olympia Arms, it is a billet lower and you are right that the 5.5" flash hider is permanently attached to the 11.5" barrel (due to federal law to meet the rules on minimum barrel length). According to the Olympic Arms web site it was manufactured between 03/14/79 (serial #1000) and 6/4/82 (serial #8845). Edit to add: according to their site most serials in that range were made for and assembled other manufacturers. L M on the upper means it (the upper) was manufactured by LAR / Martin Marietta. |

Mine had the sn" 31XX and I got it in 82/83 time frame.
I was flying AH-1s out of Ft. Lewis, WA at the time and 5 of us made arrangements with SGW (not far down the road) for kits. We saved some by buying the kits un-assembled. We were taken into the stock room and we started to gather parts according to our desires. I walked out with a heavy barrel carbine. 11.5" with the soldered 5.5" device. A-1 upper and collaspable stock just like in the picture. Mine had the SGW "Stop Sign" and I remember the roll marks being crisper and neater. While our rifles were unassembled, they would assemble full rifles on site. They might have used other manufacturors parts, but they were assembled there. I paid about $385 at the time. It was a pretty good little carbine. |

It looks like a 609 (XM177E1) clone to me.
Take a look here: http://www.retroblackrifle.com/ModGde/CrbGde/609.html If it were me, I would replace the delta ring with a flat slip ring and dremel the bayonet lug, then have it re-anodized. |

Wow that's weird. I've never seen an SGW with a partial mag fence, weak engraving, or the squared off magwells. Does it have the Stop Sign logo on it?
I've owned SGW's from 1981 to 1989 and none. looked like that one. That being said, IMO it's ether a really early one, or a really late one, or a different manufacturer all together, but not between the years I have listed. Hal |
| OK I got a magnifing glass out and above the caliber markings what looks like Q.I.A. but no stop sign logo. The whole stamping is very light and the fire control markings F and S are almost not readable. Made me scratch my head when my brother brought this over. He thinks he wants to get rid of it and I am trying to talk him out of selling it. |

I love those old school 80s aftermarket carbines... they are deffinately retro as far as I am concerned.. i wish the whole AR-15 thing was still as simple as it was then, before all the crazy acronym stocks, foregrips, rails and optics came about. |
