Ok, I've been going through my parts and looking at what I have acquired over the last few years. I've got a DPMS 22LR kit and I was thinking about making a dedicated rifle to use it in. I was thinking about doing something like this.

I have the entry stock, a set of the new carbine triangle handguards like Nodak Spud is selling and of course an A1 pistol grip. I would like to use one of Nodak Spud's new "trigger upper receivers." I have an A2 lower I could use but, I'd rather use a Nodak slab side lower eventually. Here in the Republik of Illinois I can't have anything under 16". Now, for the real question. Does the 22LR kit set the bolt face further back so that I might be able to get away with what appears to be a shorter barrel? I know it would have to be longer than my Photoshop pic above but, might I be able to get away using maybe an XM177 moderator clone to come up to 16"? I'm in no hurry to build this thing because my "defence budget" is at an all time low (nonexistent) and because parts right now are so hard to get.

ETA: Ok, back to Photoshop for further refinement.

I can't help you with your crazy state laws but looks like that would be a cool rifle...

The Ciener kit sets the bolt face back 1.25 inches.

Talk about the spirit of retro. I put together a 16" A1 lightweight for my son to use with my Ciener kit. He enjoyed shooting it the other day at the range until a friend showed up with a Nylon 66. The 66 got more range time.

Hrm.

If you go with a dedicated .22 barrel, methinks you could get away with a pretty darn short-lookin' barrel without much effort.

Here's my Model 1 .22 lightweight dedicated barrel.

I just realized how sweet it would be if I had it cut off to 14.7" and had a birdcage permanently installed.

Shade00, Can you tell me how much that barrel ran you and how long ago you got it? I was thinking that if I had 45Bravo whip up one of his special slip over XM177A1 moderator clones with the grenade ring it would really give it that short barrel look...and almost sound like a suppressed 223/556.

This is a standard  barrel that I welded up the locking lugs to make a dedicated .22lr barrel.

It effectively moves the breach face to the rear making it over 16".

That is a new barrel that I lucked into on the EE a couple of weeks ago. Model 1 may have them in stock right now. They're priced at $185 on Model 1's site. Note that the barrel requires a modified kit; a standard Ciener or other kit will not work. However, Spikes's and Model 1 sell modified kits, and Ciener, CMMG, Colt, and DPMS kits can be modified to work with a little millwork.

If I wanted to do the XM177 flash hider I'd just have the barrel cut to 12.2 or whatever would be required and have the hider perm attached. There'd only be 1.5~ inches in front of the FSB, so it'd really look like an XM177E2's 11.5" barrel.

Thanks for the info Shade. I wish I had the funds to just order up all the parts I need to put this together. Maybe I'll have to see what else I can put up for sale to fund at least the barrel. I wouldn't feel too bad using my A2 gun as a donor for the upper and lower until I can afford the correct Nodak parts.

Hmm, A2, eh? I've been wanting to build an A2.... Maybe that donor rifle could donate some parts to me.

I haven't decided yet if I want to build that .22 barrel into a retro 'partner' to the lightweight retro carbine I'm building, or if I want to make it my only 'tacticool' rifle. It wouldn't really be true tacticool, but it would be the only flat-top AR I owned...

ETA: I also found out that Model 1 sells the modified chamber adapters to fit the standard Cieners. And since I know where there might be some Ciener kits in stock at $139....

I like the looks of your rifles.  I am putting together a 604 retro 20" rifle.  Hopefully I will have it together by next week.

You have the same floor as me!! Awesome!

Middle rifle, if you want to photoshop, you might be able to cut up this picture some and play.

Ok, you caught me, it was your picture I started with when I wanted to see how a build like this would look. I liked your build so well that I saved your photo from your original post. Yep, I was the one that made you kitchen smaller when you first posted your build.

Just figured I would mess with ya. I dig my little retro-ish rifle, it's handy as hell and super light weight. Looking foward to seeing what you come up with.
