I just picked up a couple of these slings. They are like the standard M1 Garand or M-14 slings, but the webbing is black nylon. Are these perhaps early M-16 slings?

The steel hardware is coated with rust-inhibiting stuff, making it look crappy in the photo. The tag reads

NSN:     1005-01-083-8113
P/N:      11833432
SLING

Thanks!

Very nice. May I ask who had the slings for sale? Thanks.

Black nylon and OD nylon slings are still being made new.  I see them on egay all the time.
I think I paid 10 bucks for my new black one.  I also got an OD nylon sling still in the package dated '71 along with an M14 FH tool for 6 bucks .

Negative,

This sling first made its appearance circa 1985 and was originally BII (Basic Issue Item) with the then "new" M16A2 as issued in the Marine Corps. Previously, we utilized the simple black "silent" sling with plain M buckles for garrison/field duty as that was the BII sling for M16A1's of that era.

We only used the old M1/M14 OD green adjustable slings when we went to the range for qualification. I guess someone at HQMC figured we needed new adjustable slings to go along with our new A2's so, the black adjustable slings were born and issued with every new rifle.

The black 601 sling was similar but did not have the M (lower) buckle sewn to the end of the sling. 601 slings had the sling hook sewn directly unto the bottom of the sling.

BTW, whoever posted the pictures on your link needs to do some serious research.
