I'm new to the Retro builds. Saw this auction on Gunbroker and just wondered whats so special about this upper? Is it a case of bidders going crazy or is the price normal for a early 604? Link
I got a upper exactly like it a month ago and didnt pay near that.
Thanks guys

What you guys don't realize is that Colt actually made an ultra-rare Retro© line at the start of AR-15 production. These rifles are actually made of 14k gold. The buyer is actually going to profit on this when he melts it down.

I thought the economy was bad ??

Oh...maybe that's why they're selling so high... nevermind

The only thing even remotely rmarkable about it is a rather ucnommon earlier barrel marking.  Otherwise I was selling uppers in the same or better condition with handguards (even one with the same barrel markings) for $200 about 18 months ago, and about $250 in the last six months.

To someone who wants that marking apparently it is worth that much.

Heres my first upper I picked up a month ago for $280.00 shipped .Looks to me to be the same as the one that sold on the auction with the exception of the flash hider which I am going to change. It does have the early gas tube. Does it look like original finish to you guys? Is there anyway to tell?
Thanks

That is the best looking proof mark I've ever seen.

You must have a really nice camera.

Looks like your barrel has been refinished/sprayed with something.

Might be the lighting too. The edges of the stamping look really sharp. If it was sprayed with something wouldn't you think they would not be as sharp?

the upper and barrel is the same color. The lighting makes the barrel look lighter. I can try and take more pics if needed

A 44 yr old barrel usually has more of a brownish hue.  That one looks refinished to me too.

Depends on what it was sprayed with and how thick, it may just be reparked but it is definitely refinished.
