Could someone clarify the 607 moderator slots, or lack there of? I traded into a set of 607 hand guards (the carbine length triangular type). I'd like to put together a 607 to use with a retro A1 lower and my DIAS. The picture of the upper in the last sticky shows a moderator with grooves like a flash suppressor. In the ad placed by "45Bravo", his "XM607" fake moderators have a solid outside without the grooves. Witch one would be correct? Any help would be appreciated. Scott |

Early 607s had the shorter, 3.5" moderator with no slots. Several of them (not many in country to begin with) were either produced or field modified into XM177 specs, using the later moderator. I've seen 'real deal' pics with both, as well as 607s using standard improved three-prong FHs. 45Bravo makes both styles and I would say either or the 3-prong would be correct for your build. Since you are SBRing it, you can get all three and swap them out. |

Morg308 is correct. While the 3.5 inch moderator without the flash hider slots is the most commonly seen moderator on the 607, there were later versions that used the 4.35 inch XM177 moderator. If there were any real deal 607's with three prongs they were likely a field modification. So, if you want to build a 607 and be like everyone else, the 3.5 inch moderator would be the correct one. If you choose to go with a later version or a field mod you would still be in good standing. Now if you put a Vortex on it you will be asked to drop and start pushing until we get tired. |

Thanks for the input. I actually have a three prong. But I'll use one of the fake moderators. I have a light profile 11.5" barrel I was going to use for the project. I was thinking to reduce the profile of the barrel and have the threads close to the FSB. That way I still have an 11.5" barrel inside the moderator, but the barrel will look like it is 10". Scott |
| mypan was only partly correct. The 3.5" moderators were never modified with flash hider ports. While I have not seen any side by side I have seen both an original 607 moderator (Ft Lewis mil museum) and an original drawing for a 177 type. It is physically impossible to install any flash holes on the 607 type moderator without damaging the baffle structure inside the moderator. I don't have the measurments for the 607 type moderators on hand but the longer 177 type were 4.3" end to end. |
Oh, OK. I was confused about what I was only partially correct on. |
Chaos and confusion are the order of the day...perhaps you were only...partially confused... |
I'm so in love with that, and want one. Reminds me of some of the shortened moderators I have seen in various obscure pics of SOF types and IDF. Nice looking indeed.. |
Indeed I was confused. More it's a case of me opening my mouth to suck on my foot. |
Yep, I did the same thing with mine but I started with a longer barrel. Mine is closer to 13.3 inches. Yours... ![]() Mine... ![]() I don't know if WA-Tom or My65Pan is confused but I sure am. I would like to help clarify though. The 607 and XM177 moderators are the same moderator internally. The XM177 moderator simply has a longer sleeve with flash hider slots cut into it. The internal baffle tube is identical on both moderators. If you cut the flash hider portion off of an XM177 moderator you would effectively have a 607 moderator. WA-Tom was correct in saying that 607 moderators did not have flash hider slots cut into them. That would be like drilling holes in the side of your sound suppressor, it wouldn't work very well and would defeat the purpose of the sealed tube. I hope that my wording didn't lead anyone to believe that there were 607 moderators with flash hider slots. There weren't to the best of my knowledge. |
