I wrote on the retro forum a little over a month ago about my plan to build a XM16E1/601 morphidite rifle. As the parts kept coming in, and I spent more time on the retro forum, I came to the realization if you're going to build one, just do it as "correctly" as possible. Now "correctly may mean different things to different people.

My take on "correctly" is I don't need all original parts, as long as the rifle looks period correct, after all my NDS E1 receiver isn't "original. So my build is built like this:

Original Colt M16A1 upper w/chrome lined barrel/chamber
The Birdcage was swapped for a 3 Pronged flash hider
I bought a Chromed DPMS bolt carrier assembly
Of course a NDS XM16E1 Lower
A DPMS lower kit (still need an earlier selector lever)
Early no trap door butt stock and of course a E1/A1 pistol grip
A later A1 style buffer

I got my bolt carrier in just before my hunting/shooting partner Marc and I were ready to depart on our annual desert excursion for some "fun in the sun" harasing jackrabbits and coyotes. So the first time I got to shoot it was this Tuesday. I was surprised to find the upper was sighted in, and only needed to come down 2 clicks to be dead on at a 100 yrds. Cool!
Marc and I fired a 30 rd magazine through her with O malfunctions - Mongo HAPPY!

I guess my next project will probably be a correct looking 601 clone/replica. But mine will wear an A1 chrome lined barrel as I shoot alot, and I won't have an AR without a chrome lined barrel. I already got a duckbill flash hider, so I guess I HAVE to build one now :-) Then I've been eyeing all you guy's wonderful 607 clones, and I think that "bug" might have bit a little to hard also, but if I do a 607 it will be AFTER the 601, which probably won't get started until the end of the year.

I'm sorry I don't have any way to post pictures, but the E1 looks excellent next to my M16A1, and XM177E2 clones. I never got to take any rabbits with the E1 but I did get one with my XM177E2 clone :-)

Marc sent me some pictures of our desert excursion today, but no weapon pictures....DOH! if you want to see an overweight 52 year old Marine digging out a M35A2 Deuce-and-a-Half that he got stuck in a "dry" creek bed cause he's a moron, email me at <tjk2356@webtv> directly, and I'll send them to you.

Anyway the XM16E1 is a resounding success, even though it didn't get "bloodied" yet, but I'm sure it will, as shes light to carry, reliable, and accurate.....sounds like the perfect "varmit" gun to me!

That link is bad...or at least you have to be a member of that forum to view it.

I sure hope that "How To" describes the basics of photography....i.e. "How to keep your feet out of the picture!!!"

I'm a member...I didn't realize it was posted in a "member's" Forum...

I'll see if I can't copy it to my web site...

Being electronically challenged I might be missing some of the finer points of posting pictures, but I don't have a hard drive, and I don't have a mouse with my webtv, so until I buy a "real" computer I don't think I can post any pictures. Neither Marc or I took any pictures of us while shooting on this trip so I don't have any pictures of the XM16E1 yet. I just bought a digital camera, so I can snap some photos, but I haven't figured out how to get them from the camera and onto my webtv, much less transfer them to a forum.

My XM16E1 looks like any other one - but this one is mine - (sorry, it's a Marine thing:-) The receiver has "431" engraved on the left side under the carrying handle (yuck) but it matches the  white painted "MP 431" rack number on the stock, so I can live with it. My 3 pronged flash hider is blued so I'm ASSuming that it must be a repro. I'd like a earlier dust cover (bolt door) for it, as mine is slightly warped, and a late style -well, at least the same as on my M16A1 clone which has the "humped" block. I currently have the A2 type selector, which needs to be upgraded, and I still need a stock screw.

This is all just little stuff that I hope to come up with when I go to the Crossroads/SAR show in Dec. you can usually find almost anything there.
