If you could only do one Retro build would you do a 603 or 604 and why? Thanks Guys |
I started out that way,I told myself I wanted to build just ONE retro rifle ,and I decided on the 604 because I liked the slick sided look of them, plus the parts seemed to be readily obtainable.I figured that I wanted something different ,and that if I wanted a forward assist, I would have just bought an A2. Well, I was only kidding myself about the ONE retro rifle part. The next thing I knew, my parts rack was cluttered with uppers ,pencil barrels,no-trap and A1 stocks, and XM16E1 parts.I'm waiting on my third Nodak lower to arrive , and I've simply admitted to myself that one retro was not enough...but I digress... I would build the 604 because they look cool, they are extremely light and agile to throw around, and they are so simple you just gotta love them.Every time I take it to the range it draws a crowd .I still like my 604 better than my 603/XM16E1 .Good luck on your retro rifle build, but don't be suprised if you don't stop buying retro parts even after you build one . |
I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodel, but instead of buying tile and an undersink point of use water heater, I bought another upper. Good luck with your build(s).ETA; In response to the OP's question, I have a weakness for the slicksides myself. You are going to end up with one of each (at least) anyway, so it's a moot point. Trust me, I know. |
| I'd go with the slickside. I love those things; light, simple, and great looking. No need for the forward assist, I've never had to use one. Besides, if a round doesn't want to go into the chamber by itself, why would you want to force it? It's not like we're in the Suck anyway... |

I agree, you'll end up with both. I know you're saying to yourself,
We've all said at least one of those things. You'll end up with both...the sooner you admit that the sooner you can take advantage of parts sources as they come up in the EE. You'll be kicking yourself, like me, for not getting multiple parts from Quiet when he had them. |
I got 2 from him a couple months ago, before he broke out his second batch. I asked for a nice 3 prong, and got a 605 upper w/ a 20" rifle barrel (which I just had converted to a 605 carbine). The other was a 604 in great condition. |
Hey man, didn't you know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? To the OP, I would build the 603 because of all the M16A1 barrelled uppers that are currently available. They have definitely gone up in price, but they're still there. Also, you can choose between early or late M16A1, or XM16E1. Trapdoor or non TD buttstock, 3-prong or birdcage FH, OD cotton M1, Brown nylon M1, or black "silent" sling, etc. Then there's all the "kit" that's available. Later M16A1 means more "stuff" available that could be considered "correct": bayonets, bipods, 175m feedback targets, cleaning gear in A.L.IC.E. pouch or buttstock, FM 23-9, TM ten oh whatever the f*@# it was, etc. The 603, IMHO, makes it easier to put together a complete kit. Tha's jes' Beel! |
