Does anyone know what would be the standard issue for an Army SSGT 1st Log Command in Vietnam in 1968-1969?  Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I appreciate it.  Was thinking of doing a retro build in honor of an uncle who was killed over there.  Glad I could make your day.

The best guess that could be put forward would be an M16A1 with a rubber buttplate stock on it, that at least would have been period correct for 1968-1969, assuming he was issued a rifle that year and it wasn't an earlier one.

Beyond that, it would be difficult to know what he had been issued.  In all reality, he may not have had a dedicated rifle issued to him, possibly just an M1911 and they had armory with racks of rifles to be issued out as needed.  There aren't any records that would identify what weapon would have been issued to particular individual, at best you might be able to find some info on what was issued to a particular unit, but even that is unlikely.

The more information you can provide the easier it would be to give a definitive answer.  Do you have any pictures of him with a rifle, even in basic or whatever?  That would make it considerably easier to figure out what would be correct.

I have the deepest respect for all that served and truly appreciate the sacrifice of those who gave all and their families.

With that being said, no self respecting "Line Dog" can pass up the chance to poke fun at "Clerks and Jerks". That's the way it is and the way it's always been. There was no disrespect intended by anyone I'm sure.

Besides no Line Dog worth their salt doesn't know that if the REMF's weren't doing their job we'd be in deep shit real quick. We just won't let them know we know it.........

I spent two years active duty in the Marines '69-'71; 15 years in the Air force Reserve '83-98. Mostly as an S-4 Clerk and/or Operations NCO. The Remington Selectric was my daily companion; more so than my M16. More than a few of my friends didn't make it back. And more won't in the future.

Lighten up, dude. "Life ain't nohow permanent"...

I was in a maintainance company as a mechanic in the First Log in 66 - 67. We worked on anything from M151 Jeeps to armored personell carriers to M60 tanks. If it had wheels or tracks we would keep them running. We all had rifles issued to us. In 66 We still had M 14's. In 67 I was assigned to a forward support base LZ English on a task force attached to the First Cav, We were than issued M16 E1's with no training whatsoever. We were told to go out on the perimeter and have at it. I was already a gun nut before I was drafted so I knew to keep my rifle clean. Yes I could be called a REMF but I fired my weapon in anger on numerous occasions. Not all of us sat behind a desk with a typewriter.

I did, for eight hours a day...and for another eight, I stood guard duty with an M16...In two four-hour shifts... That was 1971; we had M16's with duckfoot forward assists; but beyond that, I have no idea what exact model they were...and we also had individually assigned weapons...
