I recognize that handguard third from the top ![]() Most of my 601 parts are at US Anodizing. Will post photos when they come back. |
I have to admit that the 601s are a little outside of my personal interest (translation: I really have no desire to build one myself because of a very limited budget) but, you guys are putting together some REALLY NICE guns. The amount of attention to detail you guys are going to is unbelievable. I may not plan on building one but, I love looking at what everybody else has collected.Doc |
The brown stuff has a more original AR-15 look. The buttstock and left handguard are original, the right and grip are later green stuff with the paint stripped off. I switch the furniture out to green too, I like them both. |
Very nice, and yes I remember that right handguard, the first one I ever found. |
Lol shoot, I need to find a LEFT side... ETA: Almost forgot: ![]()
|
I remember that one, you son of a gun!! |
Well I can't let Ekie and Villafuego have all the Evil Brown Rifle fun.![]() Since I don't have the original handguards, I'm considering color matching the brown of the pistol grip and painting a set. Something like or "in the spirit of" ArmaLite sn000004 (below) where the handguards appear to be made of a material that is a solid color. May even have to try the polished slip ring and the green magazine for fun. ![]() frankieb, uxb, Ekie, cimarronriver thanks for the kind words above. This is a great forum! |

Yes the upper was stripped and redone with Norrels. I haven't decided if I was going to spray the lower or not yet to match it closer. It was done just like that when I bought the upper. |
Yes Colt Grey Norells moly finish The pics make it look blueish but it is grey, lighter grey than the recievers. |

I too have been building a correct 601 rifle clone and been replacing parts as I can. Started with a Century C-15 retro rifle. These were guns that Century put together in 1998 with M16 and XM16 parts. I found my rifle on gunbroker and paid $700 for it and I lucked out with a 601 upper. The lower was an A2 which went on to become an M4. The Pics should give you an idea of the quality work that HeatNBeat does. He hooked me up. Upper Colt 601 Rear sight dial - Heatnbeat Rear dimpled pin - Heatnbeat Bolt release - Heatnbeat Shaved A2 Port Door (AKA poor mans 601 door) - Heatnbeat Mag Buttom - Heatnbeat Dimpled Selector - Heatnbeat Lower - NDS Front dimple push pin - NDS Sling- Nylon OD green FA 603 Bolt/ carrier Barrel is MP C = 1967-1969 time frame Hider is 603 era will probably replace with repro. Furniture has yet to be painted proper shade of Green 603 Front sight base - Forged and milled smooth Have a lead on a Triangle charging handle - will replace. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks!!! Ask Heatnbeat nicely and he will shave an A2 door for you as well. I know I look like a commercial for him but you can't argue with his work especially in close us pics. I have learned alot from this forum and thats how I met him. Networking is good. PS In case you were wondering thats a little can of GI foot powder sitting on the fence rail. I can provide a close up if you like. |

I'm getting closer...![]() ![]() ![]() Now to wait till the weekend and take it out and get some shooting done..... |

My contribution. Except for the firing pin, everything on/in it is correct, whether they are original or reproduction parts. Here is a breakdown of whats what. Original parts 601 upper receiver (original finish) rear sight wheel (the screw even has a hole in it) triangle charging handle Armalite port door early steel gas tube (a magnet sticks to it) barrel (1/12 twist) with cast FSB grenade ring Type A green butt stock & PG early buffer tube (two holes & no wrench flats) no hole stock screw edgwater buffer & spring chrome BC (with a early round key) chrome bolt (narrow band) Reproduction parts NDS 601 lower heatnbeat takedown & pivot pins, safety selector, bolt catch & mag button 45Bravo's "duckbill" flash hider 1 set of black HGs painted with KurtVF's green paint Total invested, just a hare over $800. Not too bad a price considering a lot of the original rare parts. Some of the parts I got incredibly lucky & got for next to nothing, compared to what some people say they are worth. Ok, ok now to the pics. Granted I am no STICKMAN, & my camera is not the greatest but here you go. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
My contribution to the thread.![]() ![]() I really need toget a better camera one of these days or learn to take better pictures. Original 601 parts: Upper half to include barrel, receiver, bolt carrier group, gas tube, charging handle and handguards Buttstock Pistol grip Sling Bolt catch button Magazine release button and catch Takedown and pivot pins Selector lever Buttstock Extension tube Non-601 parts NodakSpud 601 lower Trigger Hammer Disconnector Trigger guard Current buffer |
