That little thing is a decibel reducer?

How well did it work?

ummmmm

but from what ive heard they where to change the report of the rifle to make it sound less like a short barrel special forces weapon to an every day grunt m16.

it reduced it by 2 decibels, thats why you don't see them anymore. I looked into doing a complete retro with moderator, yea skipped it

It reduces the decibel level from an ear shattering 10.5'bbl to a tolerable amount similar to the report from a 20'bbl.

I hear they made a 10.5 sound like a 20, but for that length you could just have a 14.5 anyway. Now, a modern moderator could reduce the muzzle blast by 15 db in two inches but I can't seem to convince anyone to make one...

I've actually shot one, they do not make it sound like a 20" from behind the rifle

Is it quieter or louder?

its louder than a 20", a krink break does a hell of a better job at reducing the noise for the person behind it, not so much for in front

I had heard they also were used to slow the rate of fire when on "auto". That, because of the shorter barrel length, the cyclic rate of fire jumped up, hurting reliability.

'Course, under those circumstances, I guess leaving the barrel 14 or so inches long would make more sense than hanging a heavy 3.5" piece of steel on a 10.5" barrel.

Reduces noise and concussion to a dull roar.

They were very basic and inefficient suppressors.  Due to the fact that they were welded closed at the rear, there was no way really to clean them.

The expansion chambers would fill up with carbon and noise reduction became worse as time went by.

Having sat in close proximity to firing XM177E2s I can only somewhat agree.

Those damn things are LOUD!!

I was thinking about making one on a Form 1, but that is WAY down on my list.

They cut the noise just enough for the BATF to call them a suppressor so that they could add $200.00 tax stamp to be able to use one.

I have heard from a reliable source that they really were to increase reliability in cycling and that they reduced the DB's by 2 DB was really the coincidence that caused ATF to regulate them as silencers in the mid 70's. They actually do work OK on .22LR rounds as a silencer though.
