New here but have been lurking around. I have a chance to pickup a Colt LMG upper minus carrier and bolt. I reasearched it but am now more confused, can someone tell me if it will work on my converted bushmaster lower? I'm confused on the fact that some info I've found says open bolt and another says not. The only marking I could find on it were on the topside of the barrel between the front sight and flashhider. Stamped is the following: < MP 5.56 05751, on the rightside of the front sight is SP, and on the rightside of the receiver carry handle is CM. It has the 1" barrel with the large square handguards and a flip-up carry handle. I will try and take a few pic's of it today when I go to look at it again, It was offered to me for $1K which seems a good deal as I see they go for around 12 to 15 hundred and higher other places.

It will work fine with a standard bolt, no problem.

$1000 is a fair price.

I remember when they were in the back of Shotgun News for $299.  Should have bought a few...

They were designed by Colt as an LMG (hence the name) that could be adapted to the current rifle system.  The system was designed to be fired from the open bolt on a machine gun lower.  It is necessary to change out the fire control group in the lower to fire from the open bolt.

The upper can be used on either a semi- or full-auto gun, and will work just fine in either the open- or closed-bolt configuration.

Correct, though it should be noted that the LMG was a cooperative Colt/Diemaco project (if you go to the Colt Defense website and look at the picture on the LMG page you can just barely make out the old Diemaco maple leaf on the lower) and the factory configuration was to be open-bolt with the S-F grouped LMG specific lower.  The weapons manufactured by Diemaco (now Colt Canada) for the Danes (designated LSV M/04) was, however, from factory with a closed bolt setup.

I just built one a couple months ago; I sent the upper to Bushmaster, who changed out the A2 style for one of their flattops.. It works great in closed bolt as a semi...

ETA: The barrel on it is actually Diemaco marked.....

One of those would be a good project for someone into the more obscure stuff.  Maybe a future project for unclemoak?

ETA: Stottman, do you get a co-witness with that setup?

I got one from CDNN for $500 back in '98.  I could never find out if the original bolt carriers had FA notches or not.  Anyone know???
