You all might find this shocking, but there have been a lot of sales both to individuals and transfers to the Palestinian Police by the Israelis. A lot of the IDF-type weapons one sees with Palestinian militia were probably at one point part of the initiatives to build up the Palestinian Police forces around the time of the PLO return. Near constant infighting ever since means that those weapons not otherwise "appropriated" for various causes, could more likely have been stolen from Palestinian police, who's arsenals are infinitely more susceptible to such things than Israelis ones. The purported sales, on the other hand, are of course illegal. |

While some probably are stolen, the bulk of the M16A1s they have were actually supplied to the PLO by the Isrealis; under the abortion of an agreement thrashed out at Camp David some years back. The idea was to help "legitimize" the Arafat government by helping them create a police force. Since we had given the Israelis the M16A1s during the Yom Kippur War, I guess they felt obligated to do what we asked. I knew at the time that the damn things would be turned over to the terrorist groups, and sure enough, they have been  And yes, some of them probably came down from Lebanon. Either way, the word I hear is that the M16s, particularly the carbines, are considered a status symbol by the bastards, over an AK.
