| How many kinds of USGI M16 slings are there? I see the issed black kind, the green older kind with brass ends and the newer black one with no metal ends. Are there more USGI kinds and are they worth anything? |

Well, like you've seen, there's all kinds. First there was the green cotton web sling like used on the Garand and M14. Then they made the same sling out of nylon as the cotton rotted in Vietnam. The SP1 I bought new in 1979 had the black silent sling. This is a softer nylon webbing with a buckle at each end. Somewhere, some time, there were also black slings like the Garand sling, but I don't know if they were made from the same material as the silent sling or the slicker nylon of the VN era sling. I almost think a collector could specialize in M16 slings. I have a cotton Garand sling on my Model 604clone, the later nylon version on my XM177clone, and a silent sling on my M16A1 clone. I'm not sure if this type saw use in VN but it would be appropriate for the post war to M16A2 period. |
